Additional Rec (rating 1-10, details):: Didn’t send
Interview: Very good. There were a few stumbling points that I felt could have gone better but overall it went very well, and the interviewer did a very good job of selling the school too. Walked away feeling very good not just about the interview but about the school as well.

Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
State (if domestic applicant): IA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Did not report
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 75-100k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection
Strengths: Strong engineering extracurriculars, really tied interest in aerospace into the programs at the university, summer program demonstrates interest
Weaknesses: I didn’t feel as confident in my supplementary essays, OOS, grew up a Buckeye (but I didn’t tell them that!)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Admitted to uMich and uMinn. Deferred from Princeton. Applied early/priority but still waiting for Illinois and Ohio State. Applying RD to Cornell, Northwestern, Columbia, Harvard, uChi, Carnegie Mellon, MIT.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I was pretty down the past couple days after getting deferred from Princeton, and was hoping for Michigan to pick me up. I was a bit nervous with the talk about OOS being at a disadvantage, but I don’t have any legacy relation and I got in, so it’s not impossible! It feels great to not need to worry so much between now and the RD decisions.

Reflection
Strengths: demonstrated interest; recommendations; I loved my Common App essay
Weaknesses: should’ve mentioned I lived in Michigan for half my life and really pushed that state-loyalty idea.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have a slightly messy HS career with moving high schools, combined with cruddy past home life (domestic violence), combined with strong academics and unique extracurriculars. I think I showed a persistence and passion to just keep going. I also really like science.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Duke deferred; Arizona State accepted; applied Berkeley; Cornell, Colby College, SUNY ESF regular decision
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: wish I would’ve tried harder on the application but VERY grateful I got in.

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths:My AP lang teacher drilled proper writing technique into me. I tried to work in my experience at technical academy into essays.
Weaknesses: Low Math ACT
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good student, in-state, adequate ACT
Where else you are applying or have already applied: MSU, Michigan Tech, Lawrence Tech, Kettering, Alma, University of Alabama
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: You can get in without a great MATH score, have hope.

Son was ACCEPTED! Out of state, LSA, prospective Math major. 2300 SAT (one and only sitting), no ACT (figured his SAT was good enough), top 1% in class of ~750 students. NMSF, AP scholar with distinction. He is a “legacy”, though the only spot on the application where this was brought up was on the common app where they asked if anyone in his family had attended and he checked yes. He didn’t mention his mother attending in any of his essays because he wanted to get in on his own merit.
