General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: My Class Rank is low because my schools ranking is based off Weighted GPA. Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing really

Reflection
Strengths: Recs, GPA
Weaknesses: ACT, SAT 2 (should have taken more), more extra
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably because low ACT score compared to the average, not enough extra., I would say a slightly underwhelming app
Where else you are applying or have already applied: All UC’s Except Riverside, merced, Santa Cruz, Udub, UW-Madison, UIUC, Ohio State
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Get a ton of people to read your essay!!! Super important, I caught a some critcal mistakes afterwards; Take more SAT 2 and NEVER stop trying. Freshman year, go ham on extracurricular but FOCUS on what you want to do. If you are STEM, do STEM related extracurricler.

College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA

[ b]Objective:**
SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT (breakdown): 31; 35 E, 33 R, 28 M, 27 S
SAT II (place score in parentheses): N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): About 3.79…if they take out my summer B+ in gym then probably a little over 3.8. Weighted is roughly 4.056.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank.
AP (place score in parentheses): Eng Lang (4), Calc AB (4)
IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc BC, AP Micro Econ, AP Environmental Science, AP French, AP English Lit, AP Psychology
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Uhmm nothing really. Just being on the Honor Roll at school if that even counts?

[ b]Subjective:**
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Forensics/Debate team for 4 years, team captain for 3; swim team for 3 years, captain for 1; NHS; Science NHS; French NHS; French Club for 4 years;
Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community Service: Volunteered a lot at my local hospital for about 2 years.
Summer Activities: Nada
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I’d probably give my main essay a 9. Writing is really the one thing I excel at, and I actually wrote my essay on writing. I talked about my intrinsic fear of the future and how writing is the one thing that gets me through it. Kind of different from what the typical applicant would talk about, but I think it was pretty solid. My two supplementals were probably 8-9. One of them was about my place on my Forensics/Debate team, and I really emphasized my role as a captain and how that has been beneficial to me. My second one I thought was well-written, but it didn’t really discuss any particular things about UMICH…more just the school as a whole. I talked about my brother who went there and that the school provided me with a huge sense of home. IDK. Something like that.
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Got one from my AP English Lang teacher…probably a 10. I read it, and it was masterful. Also got one from my French teacher that I have had for the past 6 years. I read it as well, and it was pretty solid. I’d say a 7-8.
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): Didn’t read, but I’m pretty sure it was really good. We talk a lot. I assume around an 8.
Additional Rec (rating 1-10, details): It was from my Forensics coach, but it was fairly generic. I’d give it a 6
Interview: Nope

[ b]Other**
Applied for Financial Aid? No
State (if domestic applicant): MI
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 100k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My brother graduated from Umich…so legacy, if that makes me one.

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: Course load. ACT score. I speak Russian fluently. My brother graduating may have helped. Essay was very, very solid. Took a LOT of hard AP classes purely out of interest and not relating to English, my intended area of study. Also, extremely strong in English and showed huge passion for English in my app.
Weaknesses: GPA, but only to an extent. I had a B in math freshman and sophomore year and in AP Physics my junior year. Also, my EC’s are good but not spectacular. Some people’s are definitely better.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly, I have no idea!! You never know what happens. I guess they just liked my app, lol. I personally do think my essay had a lot to do with it, and I also think that UM strongly likes applicants who speak multiple languages.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: MSU (accepted), Kzoo (Waiting), Columbia ED (rejected), Barnard College (waiting), NYU (waiting)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: You never know what happens! I’ve been freaking out all weak. People with higher stats than me from my school got deferred. It’s a hugely subjective process. Anyway, so excited. Go blue! Victors 2020! Good luck to everyone still waiting, and to those who got deferred-you’ll be okay.

**Decision: Deferred LSA **

Objective:
SAT I and/or ACT (breakdown): 2070 (680 R/610 M (super bad at testing in math)/780 W/10 E)

AP (place score in parentheses): AP World History (5), AP Psychology (5), AP Statistics (3, oops! Got an A on the final exam, though!), AP English Language (5)
IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus AB, AP French Language, mandatory theology class, AP US History, AP Physics (1 and 2 crammed into 1 year), AP English Literature
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholar Commended, but that is about it besides some debate awards or school-level recognition.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):
Mock Trial program founder/team captain/Head Plaintiff Counsel
Varsity Golf
Junior State of America (Cabinet position)
Student government: homeroom representative for 3 years and Co-Class President the other (there were 2 of us)
Advanced Concert Choir for as many years as we have had the program
Varsity Policy or CX Debate (went to State and won some speaking awards at a national tournament)
Harry Potter Club Co-President
National Honor Society Officer

Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community Service: 300+ hours with Campfire USA, some other local events throughout the years
Summer Activities: Some work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Economics for Leaders (10/10 would recommend!), French cultural immersion experience, did Golf Camp one time (hilarious), performed at Carnegie Hall with my school’s choir.
Essays: Hard to gauge, but Common App 9/10, co-curricular about my involvement with JSA 8.5/10, community essay about feminism 9/10, LSA essay 8/10.
Teacher Recommendations: One from my Mock Trial coach/English 11 teacher and one from my French teacher/NHS supervisor. I waived my right to read them, but I have a good relationship with both teachers.
Counselor Rec: Also waived my right to read this, but we also have a good relationship.

Projected Concentration: International Studies (PICS program)
State/Country: WA
School Type: Private

Gender: XX
Income Bracket: $200k + between two households
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None whatsoever!

Reflection
Strengths: Essays and commitment to my ECs.
Weaknesses: TEST SCORES!!!
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have no clue but I am very grateful to them for giving me a second shot! I plan to submit another ACT score, so that will hopefully help me out.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: State flagships (accepted), Notre Dame EA (rejected), Georgetown SFS EA (deferred), UMichigan LSA EA (also deferred). RD: USC, Berkeley, UCLA, Wake Forest, American, Boston College, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Cornell
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!!

To all those who are deferred: I know it is frustrating (I have three of them) but I am trying to stay positive and wish everyone the best!

To all those rejected: Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to this process (look at my stats and decisions!), but know that we will all end up where we are meant to end up!

To future applicants: At the end of the day the process is so random that it is best to stay true to yourself. I spent years trying to guess what the AdCom wanted to see on paper, and I finally realized at the beginning of this year that I needed to just be me. All of you are amazing individuals who will change the world in some way and will end up at the right school for YOU! Admissions can be a tough pill to swallow but if you do your best and keep working on those grades and test scores, you should feel accomplished for even trying!

Teacher Recommendations: one from AP Lang teacher, he’s fantastic and definitely the most difficult grader in the school. He really loved me and we bonded a lot, I transformed in his class from shy girl in the back to outgoing girl leading the discussion. APUSH and APCP teacher who saw my enthusiasm for politics and learning.
Counselor Rec: She knows me well, and in a public school that is rare. She seems to really love me, nominated me for the Jefferson scholarship at UVA (only 1 nominee per school)

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Political volunteering, debate, MUN, work for a UN committee, and more.
Job/Work Experience: Internships at a marketing agency and in local government
Volunteer/Community Service: Tutoring
Summer Activities: Johns Hopkins CTY (2014)
Essays:
–Common App: 7/10, not a standout
–UMich essays: 5/10, I’m surprised I was accepted at all. Wrote these in the space of a day after spending over 1 month on my UChicago essays. Mentioned the political science department, and the appeal of being near Detroit - which is essentially one giant public policy laboratory at the moment - but didn’t demonstrate much familiarity with UMich.
Teacher Recommendations
–English teacher: 9/10, a teacher who not only is fond of me, but is one of the best writers I know, and has never had an unkind word for anyone in the time I’ve known her.
–History teacher: 8/10, a non-conformist who’s liked me ever since I spent most of a semester poking holes in a textbook’s account of the Cold War.
Counselor Rec: 8/10, he took to me years ago for some reason, and his qualifications are above and beyond what the job requires. Anyone he’s fond of will have a strong rec.
Interview: N/A

Applied for Financial Aid? Yes.
Projected Concentration: Political science
State/Country: Living in France, US dual citizen (other citizenship is a small European nation with few applicants)
School Type: Small international (private) school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: ~250,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): US dual citizen from an underrepresented country.

Reflection

Strengths: Awards in history and debate, strong stats, good recommendations (I think - didn’t read them).

Weaknesses: White male applying from France. OOS. Until yesterday, I was sure I’d be rejected because my essays just screamed “Doesn’t know much about UMich.”

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Has to be stats, because everything else about my application pointed towards a rejection.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Already accepted to Northeastern (with 15K/year in merit aid). Got my UChicago letter yesterday, and will probably attend there, as much as I’d love to spend 4 years at UMich.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I know there are thousands of deserving applicants who didn’t get in. I’ll make sure to let the admissions office know my decision ASAP, so one or two of them can be admitted RD thanks to the spot I free up. You can only attend one college, and I really wish I could discover all that UMich has to offer, but Chicago has always been my first choice.

Summer Activities: 1-month trip to the Philippines before sophomore yr, some babysitting
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Strong common app essay on “a problem I’d like to solve” (mental illness stigma); UM questions were decent but a bit rushed.
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): English Lang teacher; was an awesome letter but wasn’t specific to nursing
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): wrote about my cultural and service experiences & my goal to become an NP; didn’t flow that well IMO

SAT I: 2260 (710R 800M 750W)
ACT: 36 (36EMS 35R 8 Essay)
SAT II: 800M2, 800Phys, 730Chem
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Rank: 10/350
AP: 4 APUSH (few pending)
IB: 6 Econ SL, 7 Math SL (many pending)
Senior Year Course Load: HL Phys, HL Chem, HL English, SL French 4, BC Calc, TOK (lol), AP Micro+Macro (online)
Major Awards: NMF SF, many state+ piano awards, school/district recognized awards, nothing huge.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Hip Hop Crew member (one of CO’s top, 9hr/wk); competitive piano performance (state rep for past 3-4 consecutive years, 8hr/wk); NHS (President); Hip Hop Club for school, involving performing at assemblies, halftimes, parades, shows, etc. (creator/president/choreographer/literallyruneverything); Econ Club (Pres); choreograph for school mascots/cheer, school tutor
Job/Work Experience: Teaching cultural dance to 4-7 year-olds
Volunteer/Community Service: Summer hip hop camps (30hr/week); Thrift Shop managing (3hr/wk); Food/coat/book drives w/ NHS (abt 2hr/wk average); teaching free piano/music lessons to local families who cannot afford lessons otherwise (2hr/wk)
Summer Activities: Summer hh camps (see above), traveling, researched and wrote my EE/senior thesis on economics (gluten-free product market: took data and price elasticity calculations, etc.)
Essays (rating 1-10, details): CA 10/10 (about hip hop crew, more artistically-oriented); UMich 7/10 (described specific programs offered and showed interest, but I didn’t spend a lot of time on them)
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 8/10 English teacher, extremely positive but very generic; Math teacher I’ve no idea - really likes me and has a reputation for writing incredible recs
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details): 7/10, probably generic but we’ve become very close w/ intense circumstances involving a friend last year
Additional Rec (rating 1-10, details): none
Interview: Honestly, I had second thoughts about UMich after the interview. The alum, while kind enough, didn’t sell the school and pretty much described engineering as “all work no fun”; he said I would not have much time for my ECs otherwise. I don’t have many engineering/science ECs so I’m not sure he had great thoughts about my admission either… Awk. It wasn’t a terrible interview overall, but I would not have been surprised at a deferral afterwards.

Applied for Financial Aid? Yes, though received nothing so far. Hoping for merit.
State (if domestic applicant): CO
School Type: Public

Income Bracket: 150k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
Strengths: Objective aspects, essays
Weaknesses: I have no engineering/research ECs outside of school, which will probably limit me in a chance at merit scholarship
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Primarily test scores and academics, “well-rounded” (more of a benefit for public schools)
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Stanford (deferred). Haven’t heard back otherwise, and still in process of applying to many others
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Very excited to be accepted but most likely will not be attending depending on results with preferred Ross admission and cost. I have a friend who was also admitted yesterday to LSA, and she’s committed already. These threads helped me while applying – I hope this helps someone else as well. Best of luck to all! I’m sure we’ll all end up where we are meant to be

Reflection
Strengths: In-State, test scores, good GPA, awesome letter of rec, I toured campus summer 2014 and went to a “view of the u” thing (though I missed the school visit because I had a history exam) so I demonstrated interest
Weaknesses: essays, ECs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good GPA at a school they get lots of apps from, strong schedule, my letter of recommendation
Where else you are applying or have already applied: was already accepted to my safeties MSU and Oakland (my parents went to these schools), got into Georgetown EA this week, still have to apply to Northwestern
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I wasn’t expecting to be rejected but I wasn’t 100% on acceptance so I’m quite pleased! My mom works for U of M (at a different campus but still) which I put on my application where it asked for it so I don’t know if that made a difference but I feel like I should mention it. I’m not a legacy though.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA was probably just short of making it out of the defer pool. Otherwise, no freaking idea.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Northwestern, Case Western ($25k/year scholarship), Northeastern ($18k/year scholarship), and Purdue

Absolutely shocked that Michigan deferred me after Northwestern took me with the same stats. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Either way, I’m heading to Northwestern next fall, and will be withdrawing my application from Michigan. Good luck to those who got deferred! You’re still in the race! Congrats to those who got accepted!
