General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: my daughter and I are very satisfied with the news! umich is a beautiful school and the out of state tuition isn’t as bad compared to other colleges. we’re very grateful with the outcome. because of this,

Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):: Probably 8’s or 9’s. I know Michigan asks for one but I accidentally submitted two…my AP Calc AB teacher and APUSH teacher, both like me and I did well in their classes, but I know my APUSH teacher wrote hers last minute so idk how strong it was
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details):: 8, my counselor likes me but I go to a large public school and she writes hundreds of recs, so probably not too original

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection
Strengths: Test scores, extra-curriculars, course load, school rank
Weaknesses: Declining grades
Why you think you were accepted: U of M absolutely loves my school (it’s the best in the state); pretty much everyone gets accepted. But I think my overall image was pretty appealing.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Yale SCEA (deferred), going to apply to Harvard, Johns Hopkins, other Ivies, etc.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Like I said before, I had the advantage of my school rank in the country, as well as the in-state position. I know this isn’t good advice for all of you, but I think it was a big factor in my case. To be honest, I always considered U of M to be my safety school, so if you have these stats, you’re more than good to go.

Does anyone know if international students get a postal mail if they are accepted or just like Purdue we are sent emails of acceptance but no post or acceptance package?

Reflection
Strengths: ACT. I studied hard to get a 32, and didn’t study at all and got a 34, some kind of luck. Extreme demonstrated interest: multiple information sessions, 3 campus tours, college fair visits, shadowed a student, attended an application workshop. My school is nationally ranked full IB school, and a feeder school to UMich (over 100 students accepted each year).

Weaknesses: GPA definitely. I had a downward trend since freshman year, received my first B in sophomore year. Junior year was tough, but I was able to end the year with 2 B+'s in the second semester. If they received my first semester grades early this year, I’m not sure how it would’ve turned out…3 B’s for a 3.69 semester GPA. I think the intense rigor of my curriculum and ACT saved me, plus possibly my demonstrated interest. I also had very few awards and not enough volunteering.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I expected a deferral but was hoping for an eventual acceptance. Apparently I was just on the cusp of being accepted EA, because I was accepted exactly at midnight on Feb. 5. I sent a letter of continued interest when the admissions office reopened on Jan. 4, and was hopeful because I got the “good” deferral letter.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted: UMich, MSU, Wayne State University, Case Western Reserve University. Applied: Harvard, Northwestern, Columbia, Yale, Princeton (obviously no hope for these but I don’t care since I’ve been accepted to UMich)

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: This has been a long and stressful process for me, which I’m not used to because I’m known for living a stress-free life. If you’re deferred, don’t lose hope! If you know you have the stats to get accepted, you stand a very good chance. Be sure to send in a letter of continued interest, because it really can’t hurt you. Best of luck to all future applicants! Hopefully I’ll see you all on campus someday!

Has anyone gotten scholarships notifications yet? Jean Fairfax, shipman etc?

My folks are asking if there’s a FB page that allows parents of admitted students to network. Purdue has a page like that. Its really helpful.

I was DEFERRED then ACCEPTED (sorry I have royally screwed up the lovely code someone made for us to copy and paste. my bad)

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
AP (place score in parentheses): English Language (5) Chemistry (5)
IB (place score in parentheses):
Senior Year Course Load: 1st semester: Political Shakespeare (English course), AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1, Spanish 4, Arabic 2 (taken with Malone Schools Online Network via my school), 2nd semester: English class where we learn abt short stories…idk what it’s called, everything else is the same.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nat’l Spanish Exam Gold in grades 10 and 11

bSubjective:/b
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Students United for Racial Equity (Co-head of club); JV Basketball grades 9, 10; Sprachcaffe Language learning program in Malaga (basically, I went to Spain for three weeks this summer to improve my spoken Spanish)
I also put a few things in my CA that aren’t strictly extracurricular but that I do outside of school like going to Synagogue and taking my Arabic class, which is after school
Job/Work Experience: JCC Day Camp counselor for two summers, CIT two summers before that
Volunteer/Community Service: I did like an hour of fundraising outside a Barnes and Noble for the CT Food Bank, which my school organizes every year
Summer Activities: See work experience and Extracurriculars
Essays (rating 1-10, details):: idk I guess like 8 or 9?? I worked pretty hard on them and my aunt, who writes grants and also works with high school seniors on their apps (like, they pay her) worked pretty closely with me. She didn’t write anything for me but she helped me cut down word counts and really make sure I was answering the questions properly. OH also my main essay, the personal statement, was great. I wrote it last year in English and got an A and both my aunt and my college counselor loved it. It is about my relationship with religion and prayer.
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):: Probably like 10. I chose one teacher who had me for two years (chem, then AP chem) and while we were not very close, she saw that I worked incredibly hard in her class. The other teacher is my favorite teacher (he was my Spanish teacher in 9th and 11th grade) and we talk all the time and he is like my #1 fan.
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details):: ~8?? Idk we don’t know each other that well but he likes me and I make sure to keep him updated

State (if domestic applicant): Connecticut
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private/Prep
Ethnicity: White (Jewish)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: I don’t really know, it’s complicated because one of my parents recently became unemployed
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m like a quadruple legacy. Both my brother and father also went to U of M undergrad and were in the RC. So were most of my cousins and aunts and uncles on my dad’s side. My parents met at U of M law school.

bReflection/b
Strengths: SAT scores for sure, and my personal statement
Weaknesses: extracurriculars
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly i’m not sure why I was deferred. It may be the combination of my extracurriculars and the fact that I’m OOS…maybe my grades were a little low? Idk
Where else you are applying or have already applied: I’d prefer not to say, but I’ll say that there are plenty of fancy shmancy Ivy Leagues on my list and…ugh.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:

@sibibib - yes. It’s a closed group; private message me her name and email and I can have her added.

Decision: Accepted!

I feel the absolute outsider. I’m OOS, go to boarding school, and am on financial aid and was accepted in December (LSA). My GPA is the equivalent of about 3.8 (we use an 11 point scale) and my SATs are in the mid-600s. No hooks that I can think of. Parents are middle class, white, live in Connecticut. I’m active in some high school activities but nothing spectacular. Feel like they made a mistake!

You must’ve had good recommendations and good essays and your grades are good. I’m sure you are deserving!

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have no idea the other people who got accepted were intergalactic. I guess probably academics.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Berkeley (accepted!), UCLA, UC Davis, UCI, UCSD, Stanford, CalPolySLO
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I was deferred in December after refreshing my decision every 5 minutes and then accepted when I didn’t expect it. You can’t do anything right now so don’t stress out over decisions! They’re best when you aren’t anticipating them!

Reflections
Strengths: Huge, huge, huge upward grade trend. Repeated ACT attempts. Emphasis on leadership and persistence. The awards. I am instate. No detentions, suspensions, or anything like that. Huge demonstrated interest.
Weakness: Just about everything else? GPA, not too many AP classes, and low ACT score.
Where else have I applied: MSU, Wayne State, Penn, Cornell, US Air Force Academy, and Detroit Mercy.
Other Factors: Hail Scholarship. I received my decision on a Sunday, unlike the 99% of Friday decisions.
Aftermath:
I am still in shock. For the past year, I was doubtful that I would even be accepted because of my lower GPA and ACT scores. After looking at the stats of the others here, I was sure I was not going to get in. But against all of the odds, I did. Which leads me to this…
For all future applicants reading this, I understand that seeing applicants like me getting accepted can be all the hope in the world. I am a Vanguard of hope and a bastion of ambition. I won’t say that you don’t need a good score or that you don’t need a good GPA. Those are still important, but it isn’t everything. There’s nothing noble in being superior to your fellow applicant. What matters is that you show that you are better than your former self. Improve, improve, and improve, and then show it, whether it be with an upward grade trend, your essays, recommendations, a more rigorous curriculum, or whatever the hell, you have to show noticeable improvements. You want to go to an institution, and this institution wants to know if you have what it takes to strive for greatness. If you do not expend your boundaries, you will settle for your limitations. Don’t settle; Never settle. If you do, they will think you are lazy, and lazy is the last thing that Michigan wants. High stat applicants that show no interest whatsoever look about just as lazy because their attention is obviously somewhere else (Ivies.).

I originally came here to learn more about the international applicant life, but I’ve decided to stay. If any of you have any questions, message me. I will be there for you.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: legacy (3rd Gen), GPA…. I really don’t know… this school especially is very random with its decisions….
Where else you are applying or have already applied: George Washington, Cornell, University of Miami (FL), Georgetown, USC, Michigan State
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Don’t feel discouraged by everyone else’s posts here! I know when I looked at these last year I felt super stressed about my test scores and chances of getting in after looking at all these profiles here. My ACT score is not super amazing but I still got in! I know people who have gotten in EA with even lower test scores than me!! If this is your dream school do not feel discouraged! Apply because you never know what they will decide! If you were deferred then don’t worry… no matter what happens it will all work out and you will go to some other amazing place. Everything happens for a reason!
