Hi,
I recently applied to U of M’s College of Engineering but I have since learned that U of M only looks at composite and math scores, not the rest of the scores on the SAT/ACT. My ACT math is a 30 and composite is a 33, while my SAT math is a 710 and composite is a 1440. These are pretty high relative to my high school but I think low for Michigan engineering. I am an instate student and applied early action. Do I have a decent shot of getting into Michigan engineering? I am wondering about how many safety/match schools I need. Michigan is supposed to be a match school but I am thinking it may end up as a reach school for me. Thanks!
Instate gives you some advantage and if these scores are high for your school then that is great. Apply EA and don’t worried about being deferred. For Michigan, everyone needs a backup or safety. I suggest, MSU instate. Engineering is 3.9 unweighted with 34 Act avg.
If deferred they will look at Senior grades right to midyear. Doing well senior year is important.
Your SAT is reasonably competitive for instate CoE, but without knowing your uwGPA and course rigor, “chancing” someone for UMich is even more difficult.
uwGPA and course rigor are the two most important factors of your application per the CDS. The average uwGPA for the entire class of 2023 (accepted) was 3.9. So, if you’re right around there or higher, then you have a pretty good shot considering the instate acceptance rate is around 41% (Class of 2022).
There are roughly 40,000 +/- EA apps and UMich accepts roughly 7,000-8,000 of them. So 32,000-33,000 +/- EA apps are either rejected or more likely deferred. Good luck!
My GPA is a 4.0/4.0 unweighted and I am ranked 1st in my class. My course rigor is as hard as it can be for my school but we have a limited number of AP/accelerated courses. Thank you for your help!
@halloweenyay You’re instate with a uwGPA well above the median of 3.9 (class rank is NOT considered per CDS) and an SAT of 1,440 (median 1,380-1,540) and ACT of 33 (median 32-35), so I think your chances are very good. There’s also a good chance that you could get deferred and have to await an acceptance in February or March too. Hopefully not.
Just curious, how far in the math sequence were you able to go in your HS? Did you take Calc AB and/or BC? I won’t ask your grade though.
FWIW, there’s about 1,200 spots/class in the CoE, so it’s obviously very competitive.
I am currently in ap calc ab
Great! As @Knowsstuff mentioned above, do not “take your foot off the gas pedal,” in terms of grades, just in case you’re deferred and even waitlisted. They’ll want to see your senior year grades.
