This isn't a comparison of departmental quality - I know how supposedly good Michigan's engineering program is. I was just wondering what the overall feel is like in Michigan's engineering program (I'll probably major in electrical engineering specifically). Is the curve/workload really that tough? Is the competition indicative of your average public school with big class sizes (meaning rough competition)?

Also, how would Michigan compare to private universities like Rice in terms of engineering feel? I say this because I am also interested in Rice (yeah I know, the complete opposite of Michigan basically, but for some reasons both colleges are appealing to me). Lots of questions, but any answers would be great.

Great question to also post here:

Any respectable Engineering will be tough, and Michigan is not exception (nor is Rice I am sure).

Although Michigan’s CoE is significantly larger than Rice’s, so is its engineering campus and faculty. Michigan’s CoE has its own campus. Electrical Engineering has its own building, as does each Engineering speciality. Michigan’s Engineering faculty is 4 times larger than Rice’s.

Still, I am sure Rice is one of the most LAC-like research universities and will offer smaller classes than Michigan. However, Michigan Engineers definitely have it good!

It is always advisable to visit the two universities before deciding which one to pick.
