So you can get A minus in all major subjects in grades 10-11 and be classified as "4.0"?

^^Yeah. Or you could be like me, and get all B's in the core classes (which happen to all be honors or AP for me) and all A's in other classes, and your UMich GPA can be about a 3.0. Even if your transcript says 4.0. Grrrr.

Moral of story: take easy classes and breeze through high school with a decent GPA, and don't dream of challenging yourself with a rigorous course load, even if it will make you more knowledgeable and more likely to do better on the SAT/ACT, because that could compromise the Holy Grail of Michigan admissions: your GPA.

I think you make a good point.

Well this works out nicely for me…I got an A- in like every honors english class I took and apparently it still counts as a 4.0 =]

Are you kidding mastert tang??? Colleges not only look at the GPA of core classes but also the difficulty of the cirriculum. In addition, by not taking honor classes, it tells colleges that you do not challenge yourselves. I may not have a great Michigan GPA (3.6) but at least I show that I am willing to take on a challenge. I have taken 5 honor classes and 4 AP so far and will take 3 more AP classes my senior year. My moral of the story: challenge yourself and do the best you can.

I know a kid who got a 4.0 with no honors or APs and a 25 on his ACT and got in this year.

I also know people who got rejected with stats like that (and slightly higher ACTs)

jrt, did he go to a high school without many opportunities? My high school offers like 3 AP classes overall, and no IB classes at all. I’m sure they look at that kind of info too.

No his HS offered a pretty good amount of Honors/APs. It’s just a slightly above average school.

what was his desired major?

I took AP Psych in high school for fun and never took the exam, but granted I did go to community college before transferring. (Where I naturally only took LSA general ed courses which are the epitome of easy, so I guess I made a lucky decision there!)

My friend got in straight from high school though and he only took one or two APs the whole time he was in high school-- I think he dropped AP bio early in the semester, and he maaaaybe took AP Spanish. While that is something they look at, I dunno if they’d turn away an otherwise strong application just due to curriculum as long as it wasn’t even easier than average.

He is going into Kinesiology. That probably has a lot to do with it.

So he’s apply to the School of Kinesiology I’m guessing.

yeah 10 char

“yeah 10 char”

most productive post ever.

By the way, would these classes count toward a UM GPA?

Info Tech I and II - Learned how to use software like MS Word, MS Powerpoint, etc. Required at my school for graduation.

AP Psychology - This would fit under Social Sciences, right?

^ Lol, he was agreeing with the previous post, nothing wrong with that o_O

Anyways, I don’t think Info Tech will count, but Psychology should.

This thread is 3 years old…

as of october 23, 2009 the university of Michigan will no longer recalculate GPA. From now on applicants will be graded based on course difficulty along with gpa and sat or act scores. So basket weaving classes won’t get you into Michigan any more.
