Michigan Grant

I was checking to see if I was removed off the wait list for a chem 130 class, when I came across my financial aid award page. It was missing the Michigan Grant, which is about $9000 for me. I'm really confused/worried why it is missing from my financial aid page. Anyone got any ideas why it may no longer be on my award page?

I originally thought it had to do with a state-residency issue but I checked on the financial office website (University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid: Grants) but it doesn't list any state requirement.

I don’t think they’re done putting up financial aid/scholarship awards - I only have one item listed out of the 3-4 that I should be getting.

Its rare for the michigan grant to go from 9000 to nothing unless you got a substantial scholarship that fills that 9000 dollars or if you changed from OOS to instate. It seems to me that you changed from OOS to instate which changes your expected cost of attendance. You will not get the original 9000 they would have given you if you were OOS. They will adjust your aid contributions to match what they believe is ideal for your expected cost.

My residency did not change

and I don’t think state residency has anything to do with it, the eligibility for the Michigan grant is :

* Funded by the university

  • Gift aid
  • Need-based
*Must meet financial aid priority application deadline (April 30)
  • Undergraduate; first bachelor’s degree
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time
  • Grant limited to 10 full-time semester.

I did not win any more money so that can’t be the reason either. I’m freaking out right now because without this money I can’t afford OOS tuition.

I did not get an email or anything about this change as I had in the past for some other changes. In the past the changes were minimal to meet the tuition increase. Also the amount wasn’t changed, Michigan Grant no longer even appears on my financial page.

Don’t freak out until you pick up a phone and call to see what’s going on. They messed up a bunch of my loans and also FORGOT to offer me $1,000 in stafford loans that I was eligible for as a sophomore because they calculated me in as a freshman (even though I’ll actually be a junior when I start and then they’ll have to adjust it again, go figure). They are not immune to making errors, particularly errors that involve things not showing up properly in WA which has happened to me in virtually every area of WA in the past three months.

Thanks for the assurance twisted, but lets say hypothetically it doesn’t get corrected, what do I do?

Definitely give them a call, email them or go to the office. I advise going to their office or emailing since their lines are always busy and you can’t talk to the same person once you hang up for them to check on it for a day. [I’ve had a lot of troubles with my financial aid] It seems they may have accidentally deleted your award.
Earlier I thought when you said state-residency issue, you were changing from OOS to IS, so answering your real question… yes, OOS residents do get Michigan grants to cover their needs. I was first designated OOS and given Michigan grants. So just a few questions. Under Account Inquiry/Pending Aid did your pending aid for michigan grant disappear altogether? Also, under myFAStatus/Awards/accept & decline, is the michigan grant perhaps there and under decline?

And if it doesnt get corrected, keep arguing with them. You probably have “award notices” that proves you were once given the 9000 dollars, and to have that all disappear out of blue is something of a substantial change. Just continue to ask the office questions. Its probably just missing somewhere and I doubt you actually lost the money but since the billing date is coming up, you should hurry it up a bit.

Under pending aid it does not say Michigan Grant or my work study. The Michigan Grant isn’t even listed under my accept/decline page, and I know for a fact I had hit the accept all button. Also when I hit the work-study tab it claims “Work Study award is not part of your aid package.” when previously it made up about $700 of my aid package.
I am so confused because in my revised award notice that I received on 07/30/2009
this is what it states for the fall term"
"
Fall 2009

REPORTED DEPARTMENT AID- 10,000

MICHIGAN GRANT 9,059

FED ACADEMIC COMP GRANT YR1 375

FED PELL GRANT 2,675

FED SUPP EDUC OPPORT GRANT 750

FEDERAL WORK STUDY 743

"
Everything is the same except under my award summary the michigan grant and the work study is no longer there, and the Fed Supp Educ Opport Grant has been reduced to $552.

I emailed the OFA and hoping the hear back ASAP

The Reported Department Aid seems to be the problem in your financial aid. Exactly 10,000 Dollars was taken out of your Financial aid (9059+743+(750-552)) When did you report this aid? If it was really early on, they should have changed it then to adjust to this incoming scholarship. Just so you know, when michigan gets an outside scholarship, they take the exact same amount from your michigan grant, then your loans, then work study… which is what they seemed to have done here. Its a BS move but its what michigan does. Also what is your EFC? If its decently high, they may have reasonable argument to have done the change on your Financial aid. If its terrible though, they may have accidentally removed the 10k twice.

My efc is not high, its really low. The reported department aid had coexisted with the michigan grant since my first financial aid package. When I checked WA access this morning, the Michigan grant and work study magically appeared on my financial award page but it still does not list it under pending aid. I still have not gotten a response from the OFA

It takes a while for FA to go back into pending aid. It seems like its been corrected though so don’t worry about it too much.
