i'm an international student from singapore and am currently in a real dilemna.. i have been accepted to lsa at the university of michigan and the arts faculty at McGill University (rejected by their management faculty).. i plan to study business... i really need help with my decision, as there are pros and cons of being in each school...

pros of being at michigan: excellent business school, however it is extremely competitive to get in (you can only apply during second year).. great job placement rate in the states for foreigners though, so that definitely puts it in my favour as i plan to work in the states next time if i can... awesome school spirit, nice college town.. however i am more of a city person and in this case, i dunno if i would really like ann arbor.. reputation wise, michigan has an edge as i think it is more internationally recognised... however a big con at michigan are the high tuition fees...
pros of mcgill: montreal is a wonderful city, very diverse student body, cheaper tuition, about half the price of michigan.. not so much school spirit though.. reputation wise, great in canada, heard it's pretty good in the states too.. however finding a job in the states would be more difficult than if i attend michigan.. also, the business school is good, but not as stellar as michigan...

i know that the academics are probably better at michigan, but socially, i think i would have a better time studying at mcgill in montreal.. so there has to be a trade off.. so right now i guess what i'm trying to look for is more info regarding my decision.. any current michigan or mcgill students out there that? or anyone else who knows stuff about these schools, for that matter, please post a reply!!

i would say that mcgills name would be even more internationally recognized than umich. mcgill is one of the most internationally diverse schools in the world, and its reputation around the world is quite known.
McGill and UMich are quite different, but at either you'd get a great education.

Wow, it's weir'd but I think that we're in just about the same boat fin1928. I just got accepted to both UMich and McGill and it's basically between both of these schools for me too. I visited McGill during the last summer but I have yet to visit UMich. For me, the cost of the schools will cost about the same with Financial Aid, so price really isn't a factor for me. Here's what I know about the schools:

Michigan: I heard that Ann Arbor is a town run by college students, it's the total college experience. Very safe city, fun, and the school is very well-respected and is on the rise and has lots of funding. Most of the academic programs are very good. I know that most people that go there have a very good time and definitely go back for their second year. Also, if you're into sports, you'll love UMich, they have some of the best sports programs out there. I don't really know much else about the school, but I am visiting in about two weeks and I'll get back to you on how it is.

McGill: I really liked Montreal, at least during the summer. The city is wonderful and very lively, but from what I saw it didn't seem to be to diverse (I think being from NYC skews my vision a tad). Public transportation over there is fine and getting in and around the city is easy. To me, McGill's campus seemed okay, it wasn't too big and the dorms are traditional (except for New Rez, which rocks!). It is right in the heart of the city though which is nice. Also, if you're into sports like me, the Montreal Expos just relocated so, you can't watch baseball over there and the NHL is still in limbo. To me the only cons would be getting acclimated to a new language, trying to tackle the grade deflation at McGill (not sure if it's there, but that's what people tell me), and the winters (since you live in Singapore, which is nice all year around, but no mosquitos in UMich or McGill!).

Good luck with your decision!

Oh year, UMich has a lot of financial backing and I'm not too sure about McGill, I heard that they might raise tuition since the government of Quebec needs to make cuts... (ask harpgirl!)

yeah i know some stuff about umich too cos my brother is goes there and is graduating this april... he says it's a great school, just that he is more used to big city life and ann arbor at times could get a little boring for him.. he's currently looking for a job and has been to many interviews.. he says the career centre is great, esp the one at the business school... Jimmy, what do u plan on studying if u go to either michigan or mcgill?? let's keep each other posted on our decisions in the end.. btw, singapore is so freakin hot and humid right now that i really wanna go somewhere cold!! sounds weird, but hey after living in a tropical climate for the past twenty years i just wanna see some beautiful snow=)

yeah umich has great school spirit, mcgill is a bit lacking in that department.. and i really love supporting sports teams, the football team at michigan is pretty amazing.. i plan to join the rowing team next time, if they'll have me of course.. for me, going to mcgill would save me a ton of money, it's very hard for international students to get financial aid at umich... if umich costs the same as going to mcgill, i think i would choose umich...

anyone know about the quality of the arts programs at mcgill?? like say for economics or psychology? i plan to study business, but u never know, i might like studying arts so much i might not transfer to business second year...

Haha, I really don't like tropical weather much either (Turned down a full scholarship offer from UMiami). I was accepted to the LSA College in UMich and the Faculty of Sciences in McGill, I plan on majoring in Biology along with taking some humanities courses. [I want to be a dentist :D]

Right now, the schools are at about 50/50...my decision will be based on my trip to UMich.

Also, you live in Singapore right? When I visited people told me that they had to do two years of service in the military...were you accepted to both colleges two years ago? or did you just apply recently?

PS: I heard that UMich is relatively close to the big cities that you're looking for, Detroit about a 45 minute drive away and Toronto (which has great Chinese food) around 3.5 hours away.

yeah i live in singapore and i just finished my national service.. thank goodness for that! i'm so ready to get on with my life.. i applied to both umich and mcgill only recently.. i also applied to wisconsin, and a bunch of canadian schools like ubc and u of t... wow it's cool that u visited singapore before! i've been to the states twice, but only to the west coast... la, san francisco, las vegas, the usual touristy places.. i've always wanted to go to new york, i guess if i go to either school i'll definitely have a chance to go heh...

yeah i know umich is really close to detroit and stuff, but the experience would be different if u actually lived in a big city cos i guess only then would u be able to soak up the culture and atmosphere.. for me, i wanna be thrown out of my comfort zone and be totally independent.. and i guess being in a big city would be better for that.. however, sigh, i dunno.. umich is really great school and i just don't want to look back next time and regret that i passed up such an awesome opportunity to become a wolverine! then again.. montreal does beckon..... so.... i'm just gonna have to think long and hard on this one...

Have you all visited Montreal- you may have received an invite to visit the campus for an admitted students day? You all should visit if you havn't. It's what made me decide on coming here- Montreal is just incredible.
