Michigan or Michigan State?

So here's the deal: I have been accepted to both school's engineering programs, in the Honor's College at State (but Michigan doesn't have an Honor's College for engineering because they believe the College of Engineering is "an Honor's College in its own" or something). I am interested in going into biomedical engineering, then onto medical school although I am not completely sure of this, so I want to have various engineering options open to me. I know Michigan is a far more prestigious/higher ranked/better school, but I have recieved no financial aid from them thus far (though, I guess some is still a possibility). State, however, has given me a total of $6,000 per year with a guaranteed professorial assistantship, and is cheaper to begin with.

I guess it's worth noting that I'd say I do like Michigan's campus better, I feel more "at home" there, but I still do like State's.

My family isn't poor by any means, we don't really qualify for any need-based aid, but we certainly aren't rich enough to where money is no concern.

I guess I feel like I would be one of the top students at State while just above average at Michigan, which has advantages and disadvantages at both. At State, I would probably get more attention but I really don't feel I would have that stimulating an environment, while the vice-versa would be true at Michigan.

I don't want to give up the money and regret it at State but I don't want to turn down the opportunity at Michigan and regret it.

Any thoughts/experiences?

(I was also rejected at Duke RD, sadly lol, and waitlisted at Vanderbilt but I don't think Vanderbilt's engineering is worth waiting for when it would probably be too expensive anyway)

Sorry it was so long haha

If you are interested in studying engineering and your family can afford the additional tuition cost I would go to Michigan. Michigan has one of the top engineering schools in the country. You seem to want to go to Michigan more any way. The cost difference is not insigificant but will seem less significant over time.

I would have to say that Michigan is worth the extra 30K over the course of four years, especially for engineering. Since you like Michigan’s campus/atmosphere better, then I suggest you go there.

Yeah, I’m really leaning toward Michigan right now. I just think the opportunities with potential internships (I live in the city where Dow Chemical is based so I could live at home and do a summer internship there, for one), educational strength and general prestige is a lot greater. Michigan costs a fair amount more, but it’s not too bad and I think it’s actually a great value with in-state and would probably be worth it.

Thank you for your replies!

You’re welcome. Have a nice spring in Midland. :-)

Thanks! You too wherever you are!
