Michigan Selectivity

everything’s beautiful in oregon except for the ducks’ uniform

bearcats is correct with my statement. Many East Coast people view Michigan as a backup if they do not get into HYPSM + Ivy schools. I do not like this mentality, but what can I say? I visit the East Coast every year. The educated circles are pro-Ivy League schools.

“The educated circles are pro-Ivy League schools.”
Disagree. However, the MONEY circles are all pro Ivy and privates.

ya i luv the outdoors in oregon. Every time i goto a different state, i am always comparing it to oregon and they always seems to lose lol. Hopefully i will think other wise for ann arbor once i start living there lol. Hope you enjoy oregon, its great!

“Disagree. However, the MONEY circles are all pro Ivy and privates.”

Actually bearcats, only money circles in the Northeastern and Western US . Money circles in the Midwest and South (as well as internationally) do not usually distinguish between public and private, they only care about quality of institution. And there are exceptions to the Northeastern money circles…UVa and Michigan are two such exceptions, primarily because so many of them attended Michigan and UVa throughout the years.

A backup is not the same thing as a safety. That was my point in the first place. :-)

^^ That’s the beauty of the Midwest. The people are much more humble and do not flaunt their wealth/status as is the case in the West and East.

The point is many East Coast high school students don’t have U-M as their first/top choice.

Disclaimer: I am female. Yeah, I can be lazy with my terms. ;)

^^ wealth is power, status makes things go your way

I’m from Jersey and I can tell you that Michigan, UVA, UNC, and the UC’s are looked upon as highly prestigious universities. There are Michigan Alumni everywhere. Obviously, no university compares in terms of prestige and popularity to HYPSM, but nonetheless, Michigan and other top public schools remain popular in many regards. The state of Michigan might be an unpopular location, but the city of Ann Arbor definitely appeals to most students from the east coast. Michigan isn’t a safety school for a lot of students in New Jersey, but it isn’t a first choice either. Most out of state residents have amazing credentials, so it would make sense that students would be applying to schools like HYPSM and Caltech.

The reason Michigan accepts many people from New Jersey and other states on the east coast is because states on the east coast are very wealthy. Maryland, New Jersey, and states like Connecticut are very wealthy states in terms of average income per household. Thats just an opinion, I’m not saying its fact.

haha jersey…armpit of america

Love, Connecticut

Now c’mon bearcats. You know Jersey has lots of areas that are very wealthy!

you need to be from either jersey, connecticut or massachusetts to understand it… it’s an inside joke, sorry you arent invited :-p

Oh I understand it completely. I just don’t understand it. I would think you’d really have to be from NY more than MA to understand it however.

the entire northeast save the cheesemakers

Lol…

Now what’s wrong with Vermont? ;-)

they are murderers… they cause obesity and heart attacks

The acceptance rate is 50%, and EVERYONE in Michigan applies to UM.

It’s not easy, but nor is it impossible

Last time I checked, it’s not easy to get to top schools nor is it impossible.
Lets just stop with the ridiculous thread.
