Michigan State or New York University

I have had a lot of trouble narrowing down my school choices and it has basically boiled down to this:

NYU:
Cool city and culture
want to go into cinema studies there
I could run for them
around 100k of debt at graduation
may open doors for me when I graduate

MSU:
Like the athletic teams
Only 30k of debt at graduation
cant run there
does less debt outweigh the worse cinema studies program
MSU not quite as prestigious as NYU

Please help me, I cannot decide for the life of me!

What’s your opinion

How much money do you expect to make after graduation with cinema studies?

I wouldn’t even consider NYU, way too much debt.

Go to MSU.

NYU pulverizes Michigan State

And 100K in debt pulverizes any chances of him having a life before he’s 50.

How can you suggest 100K in debt over 30K in debt?

Also consider this: do you want a campus, community oriented vibe, or would you prefer a campus where you would be more independent but would not get the same sense of community?

I thought that they both have ups and downs, plus my parents said they would make sure that I would not drown under that debt by helping me out.

MSU is a great school, especially for the 70k less money and the fact that if you are going to Cinema Studies, you may be able to pull and afford an internship in India(Bombay) or such as Paris. This will be probably easier with MSU as they have the top international study program in the United States.

But is their cinema department anywhere near as good as nyu’s is? That is what I am worried about.

This is important

No, it probably isn’t.

But does it matter? 100K in debt is huge. I doubt cinema studies majors make anything above 40K when they graduate (if you even find a job), so it isn’t worth it to go to NYU.

Only a fool wouldn’t pick MSU here.

I would choose NYU over anywhere except maybe Harvard, Stanford, Penn, and Columbia. No matter the debt, it is a great education and an awesome experience. I loved every second of it when I was there. MSU just doesn’t have anything like the mentioned to offer. That is just MY opinion though, it is up to you to develop your own.

Again, such a comparison is a foolish proposition. These two universities couldn’t be more different. Do some research and then ask yourself what you like or dislike about each place.

No LakeWashington, it is not a foolish proposition. I have grown up a die-hard Spartans fan, and like the campus. Yet I have wanted to go to NYU since 6th grade when I visited the city and found out there was a university there. Obviously it is mostly a price question. Besides, you are not supposed to apply to schools that are all similiar.

Have you visited both schools?

My vote’s still MSU hands down, I was just wondering.

I have visited both schools, there campus’s are very different obviously. Michigan State’s is beautiful, but I love cities.

"NYU pulverizes Michigan State "

This is ridiculous. If its Stern or Film NYU is better but MSU is a top 100 university nationally as are all the big 10 schools. MSU is stronger in many other areas than NYU and NYU is nowhere NEAR 70K better than MSU in ANYTHING. Go to MSU.

^ That commenter is going to U of Mich. That should explain the comment."

@ Vociferous please go read the post again: “want to go into cinema studies there”

I did read the post and 70K is still too much.
