hey, i am a sophmore and am intrested in the HSHSP@MSU (mostly for research experience that can help me w/ rsi) can anyone tell me how difficult it is to get into this program? How many ppl do they accept each year?

bump 1111111

No idea how hard it is to get in, they take about 25, I think (I remember about that), the program totally rocks, and I strongly urge anyone (sophomore or not) to apply.

And I guess it probably helped me get into RSI, too :p

I do not think it would be too difficult to get in.
Last year, I received admission but I did not go.

pariah, how selective was the admissions process?

I honestly don't know about selectivity or anything to that effect.

pariah, what were your stats when you applied?

I'm not going to post any stats on a public forum, but feel free to IM me to ask any questions about the program.

I went there this past summer. What are your stats?
Even though there were only around 24 kids in the program, they accept around 30. Then again, not too many people apply there to begin with.

jenz129 what were your stats when you applied? i am pretty average, my only ap's are chem, us hist, calc bc (independent review for the exam) and ap stat (same independt review). plus i have no previous research experience

plus i'm only a soph

any comments/advice?
jenz?

If you e-mail me your stats through the board, I can probably give you a much better idea of what your chances are. My stats were pretty good:
1550 (800M/750V)
790 Chem, 770 Math IIC
96.5UW/98W GPA
6 APs by junior year
My recommendations were OK. One was pretty good but the other one was sucky (my teacher was super-lazy, wrote it the day I mailed everything in, and it was only a paragraph long). Essays were decent/good. Honestly, I didn't think it was all that competitive for juniors. We were all smart science people but you didn't have to "stand out" to get in.
HOWEVER, for sophomores, I would imagine that it was very very competitive. The one 10th grader that was there had incredible stats, is very hardworking, and is one of most intelligent people I know. I would bet that she's going to get into Harvard (and yes, I know how difficult it is to get into a school like that but this girl definitely stands out).

ya, my stats are weak as i said before, i took the SAT1 in 8ht and got 1310 (ouch) and right now my only ap's are chem and us hist. but i kno all there is to know in ap calc bc and ap stat (i'm going to see if i can get in one or both second semester) anway, at the end of the year i will have taken 4 ap exams, i'm taking the SAT2 math and hopefully can pull down an 800 or 780-90. also, i have some gpa problems. such as the fact that last year i got a b in advanced spanish first semester so I just failed second semester b/c i was going to take it again soph year to replace the grade ne wayz. however, the second semester f wont be replaced when i send in my app to msu. furthermore, i may get a b in honors algebra 2 this semester (low.. low... low homework grade). is there any chance for me?

Yes, definitely apply. BTW, my SAT score was from junior year. I got a 1310 in 8th grade too so that's not a bad score at all!! Did you take the PSATs this year? If you did, they'll take that into consideration. I think you have a solid chance. AP Chem, Stat, and Calc in sophomore year is amazing. I think that HSHSP really focuses on how well you did in your math and science classes and tests so I wouldn't worry about Spanish too much. Really focus on your essay and recommendations.

thanx for all the info, i'm still waiting on my psat score (i didnt study b/c at the time i was told by my advisors at school that it did not matter as i was not a junior) which is why i am going to study for the math 2c and take it in january.
btw, has anyone taken the sat2 physics exam? how hard is it? is it possible to self study for it?
