Besides the ranking difference between the schools (which our family thinks both are fine), can people comment on the differences/similarities between the two schools? Vibe, location, education, college life, in-state thoughts, etc. Anything!

We are OOS in tri-state area. My 2nd child is starting her college search and MSU has a particular major of interest, but wondered what people's thoughts of the school were in comparison to Michigan's other state option.

Both schools are great, though obviously, UM is ranked higher. Some will say it depends on the major (and it does).

No reason not to apply to both and then take one trip out to see both schools.

I can say, as a Long Islander, I went to MSU undergrad (and stayed at grad school as they had a much better program than my first choice for grad school which was UVa). I had the best experience and a wonderful education. School spirit will be great at both schools. I can only speak for MSU (and I think that is the way it should be). The campus is beautiful and spread out. Great off campus shops. Laid back, nice kids.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either. By the way, I don’t thin k most employers back East will care if it is MSU or UM for most majors.
