More and more people local people are applying to MSU because they can no longer afford the private Michigan colleges. That’s what I’ve heard from friends at least.

I am wanting to apply to Michigan State. I have a 3.3 GPA and a 26 ACT. I am out of state and have some extra activities.

Do they take notice that i go to a difficult private school?

Do you think i can get in?

Im extremely worried.

Don’t know how much thought they put into private schools, although I think you have a decent chance. Your GPA isn’t between nor above their average.

what do you think my chances are as an OOS student?
GPA: 3.87
SAT: 1810
Math: 590
Critical Reading: 580
Writing: 640
SAT II
Biology: 750
8 AP’s

Majoring in prevet med

Knowing that Michigan State University is very well in vet school, it may be a little more competitive. Although I think your chances are decent… not sure about the SAT score. I’m not well introduced to the SAT, and they may require ACT. GPA ( is that weighted or unweighted) is above their average, so that may help.

You will probably be accepted with those stats - I got in with a 3.5w GPA and a 2080, you have a better GPA and an 1810 will certainly not work against you, the SATII and APs should help.

does it make it more difficult for me to get in because my major is prevet? and msu does not require the act

Oh, I wasn’t sure if they accepted SATS. Well I think prevet may play a role in admission or rejection, but you seem to have a decent chance.

Your major doesn’t really play a factor in your admission, unless you’re applying to a residential program.

thank you all for your input. My school sent my transcript on October 27th and MSU still has not received it (or has not logged it in the data base). My transcript was resent on the 3rd, so hopefully the will get it this time.

bugs22, you have a decent chance of getting in.

pisilovethomas, you will most likely be getting in.

Oh and on a final note, contrary to popular belief grades are NOT considered when getting into a residential program like james madison or lyman briggs (or any other major for that matter). I know this for fact. This means admission will not be any harder whatsoever if you choose to be part of a residential program.

thanks for clearing up the residential program admission concerns. i applied to lyman briggs and was worried if that would be a problem.

but also, is it possible to get accepted to msu but not to the residential program you listed?

I would assume, they may give you other options that you qualify for or something… and if you oppose them then you may be rejected. Not exactly sure how the system works.

is it possible to get accepted to msu but not to the residential program you listed?

technically yes. I have heard people being turned down for the residential programs due to “not enough space.” However, depending on who you talk to you can definitely change into the residential programs at any other time. You just might not be declared in residential college at first, but you can easily switch your major at AOP or during move-in before the semester starts.
