Michigan State vs. Miami of Ohio

I have recently been accepted into my top two school, Michigan State University as well as Miami University of Ohio. I'm having a real difficult time deciding on which will suit my needs better. A big draw back to Miami is that it is 6 hours away from home. At the same time, MSU is very close. Besides that, I can see myself at both schools! I'm a good student, very friendly and social, and I like to have fun. I need help!

What state do you live in? They are both good colleges, my S is a recent Miami graduate and I considered Michigan State at one time, but honestly I would choose the one that offers you the best tuition.

What is your major?

Both are ranked the same.

Will your parents pay for the costs of both schools? If you’re OOS for Miami-OH, then that will cost a lot more than MSU (if you’re instate for MSU).

If you are going to pay a lot for Miami, go with MSU unless you think the smaller size would server you better. If you want a more fun athletic scene, go with MSU. Congrats on the acceptances!

To me 6 hours is still close enough that family can come in an emergency but far enough away that you will not be popping home for many weekends. I feel like both schools have a very different feel, so I would look at cost.

I plan on going into Business, possibly Communications. I live in Michigan, so obviously MSU is the cheaper choice. With that information, is there any change in choices?

If you like both pretty equally, go to MSU and save a lot of money.

“I plan on going into Business, possibly Communications. I live in Michigan, so obviously MSU is the cheaper choice. With that information, is there any change in choices?”

Not from me!! MSU’s Communication (also Telecom) is top-notch!! The National Communication Association (NCA) ranks MSU’s programs as No. 1 in educating researchers in the rapidly growing fields of health communication and communication technology. MSU is also ranked No. 4 in several other fields, including international/intercultural communication, mass communication, and interpersonal communication.

Though Miami’s Farmer School of Business also has great reputation, MSU’s Eli Broad School of Business is ranked as followed via USNWR (2009):

Supply chain management/logistics 2 (Behind only MIT)
Hospitality business/management 2 (Behind only Cornell)
Production/operations management 9
Accounting 10
Management 11
Overall 25

No. 20 nationally in 2010 by Business Week

In my opinion, MSU’s park-like campus is just as sceneristic and inviting as Miami Oxford. I really do not see the justification of paying OOS cost in this case. If anything, Big Ten > MAC, and I get to see my alma mater on TV 24/7 via BTN nationwide. Go Green!! :)

I agree…go to MSU. Unless your family is so affluent that the difference in cost is no big deal, it’s not worth it to go to Miami-OH.

Will Miami-OH give you a merit scholarship to reduce costs?

Msuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! Izzoooooooooooooooo.

While MSU is a fine school, when comparing costs remember to take into account the automatic merit scholarships at Miami. With at least a 3.70 GPA (W or UW) and 26 or 27 ACT the award is $4,500. With a 28 or 29 ACT the award is $7,000 and a 30+ ACT the award is $10,000! All of these awards are renewable for four years with a 3.0 GPA.

I have no idea what the cost of MSU for an in-state student is. In our case, the award made the COA only a few thousand more the UIUC - our state flagship.

If absolute cost is not the sole consideration, your question raises other important issues that all students must consider: how close is too close and how big is too big. For these there is no right or wrong answer.
