UCSDJake - Thanks, I do what I can.

Wow… To keep the thread going in the direction it’s in right now I should probably say “people at State eat poop,” and then the next person should just bang on their keyboard back at me…

Well, here are facts:

The average starting salary for Michigan grads is higher than it is for MSU grads.
The average stats (GPA, ACT, such) for Michigan students is higher than it is for MSU students
Most people who get into both will pick Michigan over State. State is seen as a less desirable school than Michigan for MOST people.
Michigan’s programs are generally ranked higher than State’s.

But

State is slightly cheaper.

Well played Qwerty, well played.

Unless things have changed in the last 4 or 5 years (very possible), it’s also easier for highly qualified individuals to get scholarship money at State, further adding to the “State is cheaper” theme.

On an unrelated note: Wolverine or Spartan, we can all share in the pain from the disappointing loss by the Tigers.

I didn’t even know it was baseball season. XD Go Red Wings!

what axion said is completely untrue. i graduated with a 3.86, got a 31 on my ACT, and got into both U of M and MSU so I am far from stupid. I’m a freshman at MSU and I’ve been working my butt off (studying multiple hours per night, not skipping classes, doing all the assigned readings, etc) and i still can’t seem to 4.0 all my courses.

You guys are all right.

It was a stupid decision for me to choose Michigan over Michigan State.

Why?

Because if I would have gone to Michigan State I could have just of sat on my ass for 4 years, partying 4 nights a week, and eating cheese doodles and still maintain a 4.0 GPA.

I don’t even like partying but I am pretty sure that I could find other mindless activities to do on a weekly basis!

At Michigan, I actually have to work! Heck, I even have to go to class and go to the library and study afterward!

WHAT WAS I THINKING?

I should have been smarter when I choose my Undergraduate College. Due to Michigan State’s apparently awesome reputation I could have gotten a 4.0 in Undergraduate study and then applied to any Graduate school across the nation! Whilst putting in minimal amount of effort as humanly possible. I have been fooled.

And if you don’t believe any of what I am saying(To the OP) just look at Facebook. It is a good indicator of State’s awesome academic quality.

■■■■■. Axion, you sound bitter. Perhaps you secretly wanted to go to MSU but couldn’t for whatever reason and now you’re compensating by bashing the school. Or perhaps you’re bitter that some MSU people can handle partying and school better than you can. Btw, I don’t party at ALL and am still struggling to maintain over a 3.8. I graduated HS with a 3.8+ and a 33 on the ACT, plus I got into UMich, and I am pretty intelligent by which ever test measure you want to use (ACT, IQ, etc).

Any UMich or MSU person will tell you it’s not possible to party all the time and get a 4.0 by doing nothing. Hell, it’s not possible to get a 4.0 at a community college by partying all the time.

Now go away. You’re kind of a disgrace to UMich people and the reason why a lot of people dislike certain UMich people. EXACTLY that elitist attitude. I feel bad for sensible people like Twisted who have to go to school with you.

Good day sir.

I party, work 2 jobs, go to classes, study my butt off and I have a 3.5 GPA at state. I’m no slouch…I got into MSU with a 33 ACT and 4.0 GPA (along with some nice scholarship money). Yeah…certain classes can be skipped without adversely impacting your grade…but that is the same of ANY school, even the almighty Michigan. It really depends on the subject, teacher, and curriculum in question.

I apologize that you have no life, Axion004…but I’m sure that even most University of Michigan students have the ability to do other things other than study at the library and go to class. :D

"Hell, it’s not possible to get a 4.0 at a community college by partying all the time. "

Actually, you might be surprised… XD

^ Haha, I meant partying and doing absolutely no work (as Axion implied). Everyone has to at least turn in a paper or two :P.

Axion - Come try State’s Biochem major then get back to me. I can’t speak for any other majors, but Biochem is far from easy. In fact I got into top PhD programs with only a 3.3 GPA. Apparently State does get some respect after all, despite what people like you think. You’ll probably be one of those people living at home after they graduate because they thought graduating from UofM automatically got them a job.

Which is better for engineering?

bandgeek - can’t say for sure myself, but I think UofM would be the better option academically. I know a lot of people that have been extremely successful after graduating from State too, so don’t be fooled into thinking State would be a terrible choice. Just not quite at the same level as UofM.

Well, Biochem is just a very difficult major in general…I started college as a Biochem major and ended up in Chem (not just because I’m lazy, but because it made more sense for the field i’m interested in). Biochem at MSU is definitely harder than most majors at UMich. Also, just curious, which PhD program are you in?

it’s funny how a lot of people are getting aggravated over this, because many people from other parts of the country think of UMich and MSU as the same…I didn’t realize they were different schools til I read this thread. :]

Alix - right you are, biochem is difficult. I’ll clarify by saying that while some programs are better at UofM, State has it’s very good and very difficult majors as well. Not an easy 4.0 as Axion so ridiculously claims.

People are getting aggravated because in Michigan, UofM vs MSU is a lifelong debate that I was first introduced to in 1st grade. The frustration comes from the higher ranking and prestige that UofM has that some people take to mean it’s a better school all the way around for every person on earth.

As for PhD, I’m in the Molecular and Human Genetics program at Baylor College of Medicine.

bandgeek- Overall, UMich’s engineering dept is better than MSU’s.

Didn’t get to read through all the thread myself yet, but I would say University of Michigan… but this is my opinion. I mean both are great schools, Michigan does excell in academics much more, and is known for its college location. Michigan State University also has great academics. Though overall, including everything from grass to academics, I would go with University of Michigan.

(Oh yeah, I’m looking for this website I’ve lost. Its like collegeclicktv, but has a forum on it. It’s a sorta new website, all about universities… I think the name might start with a “b”. The background I think is sorta a blueish purprle, and the homepage has like 4 advertisement pages. Recently they did a giveaway in september for a labtop. Uh… basically its a forum with college videos… I can’t think of the name, anyone know?)

Okay.

Mentioning how great your GPA/ACT score was in high school and about “how your study your butt off” doesn’t make Michigan State any better of a University.

I’m sorry, but I could care less about what you did in high school and what you do in College; I’m not your mom.

The fact still remains that MSU is known as a Party School, and Michigan is known for academics. You can argue with me all you want but do keep in mind that I didn’t make these reputations; the quality of the students who attend these Universities makes the reputation.

At Michigan, if I sleep in and miss a morning lecture I get nervous because I know that in order to succeed I should attend every class because I am paying to receive an education.

At Michigan State, I just haven’t seen this sort of attitude. Learning is put as a secondary achievement and the grand majority of students just want to go wild because they can(the University attracts these types of students). You could obviously be an example of someone who doesn’t live this type of lifestyle but individual action is meaningless in comparison to the entire University as a whole.

And as I stated, at Michigan State you can skip lecture and still maintain a 4.0 GPA. Good luck trying that at a real University.

Like I said: I should have gone to Michigan State. I would have had to do considerably less work and still have gotten a near perfect GPA. It was stupid of me to come to Michigan!

Axion - Before I go on further with this pathetic excuse for a discussion, would you mind telling us what you’re majoring in?

I actually took two classes at U of M. One was a calc class, one was an anthropology class. 4.0ed both of them, skipped probably 1/4 of the classes. There are classes both places that you can skip, and there are those that you can’t.
