I was hoping someone could tell me about their favorite parts of student life at Michigan. I am so excited to have ben admitted EA to LSA but have never been to campus. What is school spirit like in general? I come from a small school and am a bit intimidated by such a big one!

Thanks!

Student life is kind of a wide open topic, and it varies greatly from student to student, but in general:

Any sports games are huge, and when we’re playing a rival school everyone gets excited. People are very friendly and there is always something to do on campus on any given night. The university provides several activities, and if you are into parties, fraternities hold parties thursday - saturday. Everyone is friendly and the student body is the definition of work hard - play hard. School spirit here is the best of any university in the world.

The university seems big with the number of students, but between the people you’ll meet in your dorm, the organizations you join, and your classes, the school gets small quickly. If you are really looking for a close atmosphere, I’d recommend joining a sorority, but it is not necessary. The saying goes that you can make a big school small, but you can’t make a small school big.

Do you have any more specific questions?

Can non Greek guys get into frat parties?

Thats great! It sounds like so much fun. How hard is it to join a sorority?
Also how cold is it really…? If I’ve never seen snow fall before, am I in trouble?

zier- not as much as you’d want to.
cali- if you want to join a sorority and go through rush you’re pretty much guaranteed a bid somewhere. That’s definitely not the case for guys, I know a lot of guys that didn’t get bids. It’s been a pretty warm winter so far but my definition of warm is probably very different from yours.

I’m from So Cal so I never really experienced a Midwest winter, but the weather isn’t that bad. I’m not gonna lie, it sucks pretty badly on a few days when its 10 degrees outside and the wind is picking up, but you don’t spend that much time outside. This winter has been waaaay warmer than last years though.

I have a good amount of California friends who ate adjusting fine, for the most part they seem to have gotten use to it.

Everything said so far about social life is spot on, work hard - play hard.

Getting into frats for guys, basically befriend a.lot of girls both in and put of Greek life and you’ll be good.

Joining a sorority is relatively easy. You have to go to the different houses throughout greek week and talk to the sisters. You have to dress up and impress people, but like the guy before said, everyone seems to get a bid from somewhere, and I’ve heard good things about the sororities here. The fraternities work very differently when it comes to the rush process but I won’t go into that.

There was just a mosh pit with blasting music at 245 am by the cube. I’d say student life is pretty good haha.

D had no interest in joining a sorority, but her friends decided to go through rush and she tagged along. She found some of the sororities to be very sterotypical, but there were three that she liked a lot and one of which she fell in love with. She ended up joining that sorority and she loves it.
