Hey everyone! I posted before but would like some more input on my decision. UCLA was also previously on my list but taken off for travel considerations. I plan on starting out in math/econ then applying for the business schools at all three of Michigan, UVA, and UNC. I have visited all three campuses and I really, truly love them all and could see myself at any of the three. I have tried “making the decision in my head” so that I could see what it felt like to say I am going to X school. When I do that exercise, all I can think about is what I am missing at the other two. The pros and cons of each school all cancel each other out in my book, so no school is above the others. I have no clue what to do. I tried to just pick randomly today because I wanted to be done with it, but I couldn’t follow through with that. I try to “choose” one on a daily basis, and I choose a different one every day. Any input on the colleges themselves or on how to make a decision would be greatly appreciated! It is a dilemma, but it’s a good dilemma to have!
Seems to me that Michigan is your best choice because all of the departments you mentioned (math, econ in LS&A) and Ross are very highly regarded. Your only hiccup is transferring to Ross (40% rate, but much higher % with high GPA). I would see how difficult it is to transfer to the business school at each university, estimate how you you think you might do, and what might happen if you stay in math or econ.(Sometime recruiters pull from those dept. as well). If it is easy or guaranteed admission to UNC or UVA business you might want to choose them to minimize your risk.
Do you have a post graduation goal (work - where?, grad school etc…) ?
@TooOld4School the rate for transfers to business at UNC and Mich are both in the 40s, while UVA has about a 60% rate. However, I’m pretty confident that I will do well enough to get into any of the b-schools. All 3 universities also have other terrific programs, so I have a decent Plan B at all of them if I don’t get into business.
Post graduation I hope to either go straight to work (NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, DC would all be great) or go to grad school for a JD/MBA dual degree. Law also really interests me so I was looking into those sort of programs. Would that change anything about my decision for undergrad at all?
Considering your options, and assuming there are no financial restraints, I would go for Michigan or UVa…depending on fit.
Any particular reason for no UNC? @Alexandre
Ross and McIntire are slightly better than Kenan Flagler, and Michigan and UVa have great law schools of their that admit a lot of their own alumni. UNC is an excellent university, but I think in your case, Michigan and UVa are better.
That being said, if you are OOS for all three, UNC is roughly $10k/year cheaper than Michigan and UVa. If you need to take out loans to cover the difference, then UNC could well be your best option.
Didn’t think of going to law school at the same university as undergrad. That is a good point. But wouldn’t you say that UNC also produces a lot of students who go to prestigious law schools? Just wondering if there is any advantage to going to undergrad and law school at the same university. @Alexandre
Another thing that maybe important is that I am in honors at Michigan and not at the other two.
The honors part would probably push me over to Michigan if it gives you priority in class registration. That can make a huge difference for public schools getting your pick of the best classes, best teachers, and preferred time of day for classes.
What was the final decision?
