Michigan v. Maryland

I am accepted to Michigan's honors program and Maryland's College Park Scholars. I visited both and I like Michigan better, but I'd probably still be happy at Maryland. I'm a very ambitious student, and I think I'll find more like-minded kids in Ann Arbor. I want to be a poli-sci major, which both campuses are good for (UMD near DC and UMich incredibly active politically.) Maryland offered me an $8,000 scholarship. I hope that Michigan can match it, but I don't have my hopes up. At this point, the difference between Michigan (0 aid) and Maryland is $15,000 for my family. Combined, my parents' salaries are modest (50-80 k, without getting into much detail). They're aging, and retirement quickly beckons. I have no younger siblings to worry about.

So should I go to Maryland and lighten my family's financial load or go to Michigan, which I prefer.

If you want a total college experience, then you should go to Michigan. I haven't heard much good about the Maryland campus or the that it's in.

Over and over again - the college freshman say they wish they hadn't gone into debt.
