Michigan V.S. Johns Hopkins

Hello,

I am going to be a Biomedical Engineering major planning on going into med school in college and I have the choice between Umich Ann Arbor and Johns Hopkins.

And so, I am currently leaning towards Ann Arbor, but I was wondering what the pros and cons are of both schools. Which school do you think would be good based on my future goals.

Based on your futuer goals, it does not really make a difference which of the two you go to. Medical schools will consider students from both those schools equally and wil look mainly at their GPA, MCAT, essays, ECs, research experience, recommendations and interviews.

However, JHU is #1 in BME, while Michigan is roughly #10. This won’t make a difference in the academic domain, but it may make a difference when you are looking for a job in the Biotech field.

You should also consider fit. Which school would you prefer from an experience point of view.

I posted this on a similar thread. It will probably be of some help to you:

I was also accepted to both JHU and Michigan for engineering. After participating in an overnight visit at both campuses, I chose Michigan. Academically, they’re pretty much on par with each other. The real tie-breaker for me was the atmosphere of the two schools.

At any given time on the Michigan campus, I saw at least ten kids rocking michigan gear. Everyone I talked to genuinely loved their school and said they couldn’t be happier anywhere else.

At Hopkins, there was absolutely no school spirit. Literally everyone that I talked to said that there are some days they completely regret coming to JHU, but more days where they are happy they came. The general consensus was that the work is overwhelming and you have to make your own fun, but that in the end, the degree from Hopkins is worth it.

In my opinion, an engineering degree from Michigan is just as good, if not better, than one from Hopkins. So why deal with all the negatives of Hopkins if you can have a kickass time at Michigan?

If you (or anyone) wants more insight, just PM me. I spent a lot of time on this decision

Well, a degree from either of these schools is well respected by med schools. Hopkins IS number 1 in biomedical engineering, but Michigan also has a strong engineering program.

As far as med school, it would really depend on how well you did at either of these schools, despite Hopkin’s reputation. So basically just go for fit.

Hopkins was actually my first choice, michigan my second. I was waitlisted by hopkins so ill be going to michigan. I probably couldnt afford hopkins anyway and I love michigan anyway, theyre both really great schools, good luck with whichever one you choose!

Just for fun, read the urbandictionary definitions for Johns Hopkins.

the urbandictionary entry for umich isn’t all good either.

It really isn’t good for any school.
