Michigan vs. Georgetown vs. Oberlin

Thoughts on Michigan versus Georgetown versus Oberlin? Pros and cons? For a smart, gregarious, athletic, politically progressive city boy interested in racial justice. Wants intellectual but well-rounded environment.

Have you been accepted to these schools? I would hope that you would have researched these schools to verify that they had the type of environment you prefer before you applied. How do their net costs compare? Do you want a large university or not?

Isn’t Oberlin the one in the news about racial comments or something?

Yes it is. Also anti-semitic and anti-gay comments.

Georgetown sounds like your type of school.

^ Agreed GU.

Kind of a cheap shot, since the Oberlin community is overwhelmingly united against these things, and my understanding is it’s not even clear whether it was someone associated with Oberlin who was responsible for them.

On the “politically progressive” front, there’s not much to choose between the three schools. Oberlin was founded as the nation’s first coeducational college, and it was the first to admit and the first to graduate black students. It’s been a beacon of progressive thinking in Ohio ever since. Ann Arbor is one of the most progressive cities in the nation, with a large, progressive, politically active student body. Georgetown’s students are also politically left of center, though traditionally more mainstream than Obies and Michigan students who have sometimes veered further to the left.

You’ll find the “intellectual but well-rounded environment” at any of these schools, though to be perfectly candid, I find both Michigan and Oberlin a little more “intellectual” than Georgetown which to me has more of a pre-professional vibe.

Add Oberlin back on the list. The two student perpetrators have been sent off campus for an extra spring break.

As a Michigan resident with many friends at U of M- they all love it. Everyone I know he is going there now (and are all freshmen or sophomores) got really involved, enjoy class, and think the social life is a blast. I have been to Ann Arbor and can testify that it is a pretty nice place. I never really researched their academics too much because it is personally too big for my taste, but it is probably (in general, it may vary program to program) the best education in the state.

Oberlin is more my taste with the liberal arts feel. However, I think Georgetown would be the best for what you want to do. It will give you the most opportunities to excel in the political arena, I think. That being said, I think all three schools could give you options in your future and are admirable institutions. Good Luck!
