So I was accepted to both the University of Michigan College of Engineering and Michigan State's Honors College (instate for both). In Februrary I'm going to MSU for the ADS comptetition (probably...don't know if I want to cancel and just go to Michigan). I've toured both schools and while some people say they just "fall in love" with a school the moment they set foot on campus, I was not as emotionally stirred on my visits, and I am still unsure as to what school is the best for me. Deep down I feel like I want to go to Michigan but I'm not sure if this is just a subconsious desire to be admired for going to U of M or if I would really fit in better there. I know Michigan has a better engineering program, but the honors college at MSU is supposed to be good too. Just one final thought: When I visited Ann Arbor I felt like I wasn't in Michigan anymore. This is exactly what I was hoping for because since I started looking at colleges I've had a longing to expand my horizons and go somewhere out of state, or at least leave the confines of Metro Detroit. Well, it's too late to go out of state now, so U of M or Michigan State are my only options. From what I've seen/heard, MSU seems like a homogenous college of suburban middle class conservatives from Michigan...pretty much an extension of the upper 50% of my high school. I feel like the liberal, nerdy, openminded atmosphere of U of M is more to my liking, along with the overall ambiance of Ann Arbor. So...should I even go to MSU's ADS competition, or should I just submit my nonrefundable U of M deposit? Which school is for me? Let the MSU/U of M bashing begin!

I’ve heard UM’s engineering campus is a bus ride away from the main campus… Just jabbin’ my UM buddies on this site

Your points seem valid. Will MSU cost you appreciably less than UM?

Check out the College ******* profiles for MSU AND UM. They provide a good comparison:

Most MSU buildings are a bus ride away. MSU is the only campus I know that reserves 20 minutes between classes.

First shot from the Maize & Blue!

“Will MSU cost you appreciably less than UM?”

Not unless I get one of the Alumni Distinguished Scholarships ($1500, 2500, full, full ride). The total instate costs are about $23,000/year for U of M, and $20,000/year for MSU so I would only really stick to MSU if I got a full tuition one, and thats pretty unlikely. I did get a nonrenewable $1500 merit scholarship for UM :)

^ I agree that if you get a full scholarship to MSU, that would be tough to beat. Engineering employment opportunities will likely be pretty similar.

In fact, that’s one thing you should check out. Ask the career center from both schools for a list of companies that have recruited on campus over the past year…see if there are companies you would like to work for.

Ya the thing is I have this feeling that even if I get the full sholarship, which is close to impossible, I’m still gonna want to go to UM. I think most big companies recruit at Michigan.

It sounds like you’ve answered your own question here…you seem to really want to go to Michigan.

I was thinking about going to UM too, this site has a bunch of videos about the campus life from actual students, maybe it’ll help ease your decision. It was really helpful for me…

If you say no to Michigan it’s a decision you will regret for the rest of your life.

UM def has better reputation than MSU but UM is SOOOOOOOOO overrated and doesn’t worth its tuition.

Tell that to all the ivy applicants who use Michigan as a safety…

agreed…

No. I mean that there are plenty of people who say no to Michigan (or any other non-HYPSM) school and will not regret their decision for the rest of their lives…

I said yes to Michigan and I regret but then I am a fullpay.

Prodigalson, I m fairly certain that res ipsa was referring to chosing MSU over Michigan, not an Ivy League over Michigan.

I am referring in particular to the OP and the decision he is about to make and basing this off his posts. OP is not an ivy applicant. Others may be better off at MSU or MSPYH.

Bump…so should I just go to UM? I need to decide whether or not I want to cancel my reservation and get a refund for the ADS competition soon…like in the next day or two. I still don’t reall understand what the “honors college” at MSU really is. Another thing to consider is that I want to get a job outside of Michigan when I graduate, so if I’m not mistaken UM is better for that also. So ya just a few more random thoughts…

It sounds to me like you want to go to UM. I know that prestige doesn’t matter and blah yada yada but you’re going to be paying approximately the same price for each school anyway and UM is definitely considered to be among America’s top universities. So why not go to the school that you subconsciously seem to be favoring?

It all comes down to the potential scholarship money I could get from MSU, but I don’t know if MSU is right for me. I don’t know if it’s not right for me either…that’s the thing.
