Michigan vs. UCLA

Hi guys I’ve been admitted to both schools but find it hard to decide which one to attend. I can think of pros and cons about both but I’d love more opinions to help me with the decision.

Michigan: got accepted into LSA Honors Program, undecided. I think honors is a big deal and can really help. Really love the campus and its atmosphere. But I am a bit worried about the weather.

UCLA: Better rankings. Better weather. LA is also a big city that I really like. I just don’t know much about its academics and research/internship opportunities.

I was thinking about majoring in Econ/Math/Stats, but haven’t really decided yet. I wonder which school is doing better in these fields…

Please let me know what you guys think! Thx so much;p

Both are good for your interests. Is there big cost differences for you? That may help sway my decision.

I’d go to Ann Arbor.

Honors programs can sometimes give great perks, like priority registration, ensuring that you get thee classes you need, as well as the better professors. Honors may even help in obtaining the research/internship opportunities. I don’t know specifically about UM’s honors program! Look into the perks while making your decision.

I’m not so sure about the rankings: Michigan outranks UCLA in most academic programs according to USNews. If UCLA is ranked ahead of Michigan in a publication, it isn’t due to academics.

If you chose UCLA for the weather, that would make sense. Or if you could save money by going there, that would make sense. Or maybe you’d prefer the campus vibe and culture. But Michigan takes a backseat only maybe to Berkeley in terms of academic strength among state schools.

Thanks! I’m international so the cost wouldn’t make a huge difference… I’m just wondering which school would be a better choice if I’d like to go on to grad school in the states.

If you are from Asia, then I think UCLA would give you a slight advantage back home. Europe; Michigan.

Thank you so much for everybody who takes time to answer this!

Can anybody let me know which school is doing better at Math/Econ? Cuz I’m definitely going to stay at L&S as an undergraduate but I’m hoping to enter a graduate business school. Which school can give me a better shot at that?

Please help! Thanks! :stuck_out_tongue:

Where do you plan to look for a job after graduation? If you plan to stay on a west coast, UCLA might be a better option.

Any difference between Michigan and UCLA would be insignificant. Both are excellent. Have you visited the campuses?

My only concern with any California public school at the moment is with the budget crisis that is currently going on in that state. Financially, The University of Michigan is considerably stronger than any UC school.

@rjkofnovi Would the budget crisis affect the quality of its undergraduate education to a large extent? I feel that UCLA does a better job in its geographic location, but the resources that I can get from a school definitly matters more to me.

@Alexandre I’m an international student so I don’t have the kind of opportunity to visit on such a short notice :frowning: I’m attending a UCLA international reception next wk but I’m not sure how much it’d help.

btw Does anybody know what kind of opportunities can the Honors Program offer me???
