Michigan vs. USC for Pre-med??

Hey guys! This is my first post on CC and the deadline for submitting my SIR is coming up! I'm still undecided!! I'm definitely going into pre-med, but I can't decide whether to go to USC or Michigan. For U-M, I'd be OOS and I'd be facing around...$23,000 a year, whereas for USC, I'd be paying virtually nothing...

If you are fairly certain you want to go into medicine then the obvious is USC. If you want to go to med school, going to the cheapest undergraduate school you can still be proud of is generally good advice.

Go to USC for free, of course!

USC is a no brainer here. Save your $100k and go to USC.

Hmm, disregarding costs for the moment though, I’m aiming for UCSF for med school and I’m wondering which school would give me the better resources and chances to get there. Any suggestions??

Unless you’re terrifically wealthy, I really don’t think your decision should be based on soft tangibles when there is such a major cost differential and when you’re going to be indebted enough from med school.

Your competitiveness as a med school applicant will have much more to do with WHAT you do with available resources than what resources are available, if you know what I mean ;)

Go to USC as U-M doesn’t have a pre-med major or concentration.;)

^Well that’s not true at all, they do have a pre-med track (no real school has a pre-med major). But go to USC if it’s free.

I beg to differ. They do have pre-med advising but there is no such thing as a “pre-med” track. There are requirements of med schools that can be satisfied by choosing any major, of which biology would probably be the easiest to meet. Also, there are schools that actually do have pre-medicine majors.

USC, without a doubt. It’s so much cheaper plus it’s got better weather.

“Go to USC as U-M doesn’t have a pre-med major or concentration.”

The above has to be one of them lamest reasons to attend ANY school. Because Michigan doesn’t have a so called, “pre-med major or concentration” that it isn’t as good as USC for getting it’s students into medical school. Absolute nonsense. USC is the only logical choice for the OP in this case. A free education at a highly respected university trumps paying out $23,000.00/year almost every time!

@rjkofnovi, it was a joke but apparently that fact escaped you. :)

^^^^Sorry. I missed it, obviously. :-)

Thanks guys!! But still wondering (since I absolutely love the environment and opportunities at U-M), if spending a year or 2 at USC and then transferring to U-M would be a good idea?? would it affect my chances of getting into med school at all? waste of time??

At the moment, it does look like i have no choice but to go to USC, but I personally felt that U-M would fit me better…

I don’t think it would affect your chances, unless your grades started to drop a whole lot.
