Michigan vs UT Austin vs UCLA - Engineering

^^^^^Gee, as if Michigan didn’t have Ross for the OP to ponder for an MBA. I was referring to the traffic when a student has to travel 25 miles away to see UCLA play its home games in the Rose Bowl. It’s pretty sad when your biggest football rival has their stadium much closer to your own campus! Of course since we’re talking about large distances, Booth and Kellogg are much closer to A2 than UCLA is to the Bay Area.

The polar vortex goes away eventually. Traffic in cities like LA is eternal.

They spent 4 years (still ongoing) putting a carpool lane on the 405 freeway. Didn’t help at all.
Subway to the sea is still decades away.

I didn’t realize Anderson takes students right out of college, or do they?

well I didnt get into Berkeley so that’s that. Because Ann Arbor is a mid-sized college town, it is harder to find internships than in say LA?

If you want to work for a local firm, I would say yes, since there are more local firms in LA than in Ann Arbor. If you want to work for a Fortune 500 firm, then no, since they recruit just as much, if not more, at Michigan than at UCLA.

They do. post-undergraduate work experience, while highly recommended, is not a requirement for admissions into Anderson.

anyone know how hard it is to get internships in Ann Arbor?

Most Michigan students do not stay in Ann Arbor for their internships. Ann Arbor is a college town, not an industrial or corporate center. But if you mean how hard is it for Michigan students to secure internships, then the answer is not very. I would guess that Michigan engineers are at least as highly recruited as Texas and UCLA engineer. Below are links that you may find informative.

@Alexandre you’re a life saver. I’m trying to make the case for Michigan to my parents and those sites will go a long way in helping my case :stuck_out_tongue: thanks a lot

Being in a major city is not a requirement. UIUC, Purdue, Cornell, Dartmouth etc… are all located in rural areas and they grads find excellent jobs when they graduate. Michigan is no different.

It isn’t the job prospect which concerns my parents. its the internship opportunities that Austin/LA will offer but going to Detroit for an internship isnt that bad either.
I have a certain attachment to Michigan because it was the first top-tier school I got admitted to haha.

Ann Arbor is part of the Greater Detroit area. There are many automobile and auto parts companies in the area. However, most of the engineering students I know at Umich go out of this area for internships as far as in Europe. I would say the internship opportunity at UMich is really great.

Thanks for all the help guys and I just want to let you all know that I’ve committed to UT-Austin. You guys have been great :)

Best of luck to you there shawnandgus. UTA is a very good school!

Congratulations on choosing such a fine school. Best of luck over the next four years!

How did you decide on UTA over UMich, shawnandgus? Just curious, as my son is trying to make the same decision at the moment!

Congrats! My cousins went to UT Austin too. I love the landscape there. Where is your home state? If you are oos for all 3, Austin may be the cheapest.

@shorner It was a tough call to be sure. We talked to people we knew who had gone or are currently in UT and everyone basically said the same thing. “Its a great place”, “great campus”, “great reputation”, etc… We unfortunately didn’t know anyone in Michigan so we couldn’t talk to anyone there. But I honestly don’t feel that would’ve changed the decision because we knew going in that Michigan and UT are neck-in-neck in almost every category under the sun.

In the end, what swayed us towards Texas was that we had lived in Dallas for a while so we were more familiar with the Austin area than the Ann Arbor area, it is a tad cheaper (only about 5k but over four years, the savings can be quite a lot), and the Austin area is a much better area to get internships in technology companies.

@billcsho I’m from India so technically OOS for all three but yeah Austin is still the cheapest one for me
