So I got into to all these schools but now I have to make a decision. I like Michigan by far the most and it's probably the best for my major (Econ) but it is a little more expensive than the others, esp Missouri bc I'm instate and they offered a lot of money, like near full tuition. I love Columbia, MO but I'm just not sure I want to go to Mizzou. Wisconsin was great too, I loved it but again is it worth out of state tuition? Clemson was alright but kind of another just fall back school. I can afford all of these options, money isnt too big of a deal but where do you guys think is the best choice? NOtE: I have visited all of these and still liked UMich the best

Aw come on I need at least one answer!

Mizzou is a good university. It is hard to justify paying full freight for Michigan when you can attend a good university for much less. I am afraid Michigan Econ is not worth $100k more than Mizzou. Few Econ departments are. Chicago, Harvard, MIT, Princeton and Stanford come to mind, but few others do. Even then, $100k is a lot of money.

Of course, should your parents be very wealthy, then spending the extra money on Michigan may be worth it, but otherwise, I would go to Mizzou.

I don’t see any reason to go to Clemson over Mizzou.

I think Columbia is nicer than many other parts of Missouri and Mizzou is a decent school. Think about the opportunity cost of the extra tuition at UMich. If you decide that the Michigan experience is worth forgoing other opportunities that might be available with that money, then go for it. If not, stay in-state.

Wisconsin now has the best econ dept of the group with some major recent hires from Penn, Texas, PSU and Michigan at the senior level. It’s much less expensive than UM and might be a good compromise. And the other aspects are hard to beat–great sports, great social scene, amazing school spirit.

These hires don’t look to shabby from The University of Michigan either barrons. You know, Michigan hires faculty too:

The Department of Economics welcomes the following new faculty this fall:

Professor Daniel Ackerberg
PhD Yale University

Assistant Professor Manuela Angelucci
PhD University College London

Assistant Professor Jeremy Fox
PhD Stanford University

Assistant Professor Shaun McRae
PhD Stanford University

Go to Umich! I mean it’s really very well-known in the world (At least in China) and one of the strongest universities in the US. I believe you should choose Umich(far more better than your other schools in my view_. Would you like to give me some advice in college selection as well ?

I’d say go to Michigan. If you can’t (or don’t want to) afford it, go to Missouri. I don’t think you’ll see much benefit long term of UW or Clemson over basically free.

However, not everything is measured by money. if you go to UW, you’ll have a lot of friends from Wisconsin, and a lot of connections to jobs in Wisconsin/Chicago. And very few connections in MO, if that’s where you want to be long term.

Run the numbers, but if you can make the $ work, I think you’ll be happiest in Michigan. Don’t forget to factor in flying from MO to MI 3-4x per year!!

I’d go to Michigan, particularly if you want to do anything in business.

There is a difference between bringing 4 known tenured level profs and 4 rookies

Thank you everyone haha. I think this is really just coming down between Michigan vs Wisconsin for me…this is so damn stressful!

If you like Michigan and you can still afford it (even if it’s expensive, and by afford I mean not go seriously in debt), go there!

I go to Clemson and if you have any questions let me know!

whammy3 - Great to see you chose Michigan. You made the right choice!
