Which school would be better to pursue a biology major in? I know Michigan is a better school overall, but Wisconsin has a better biology program.

Which one would be most beneficial if I was planning on eventually applying to medical school? Is one better than the other in terms of research opportunities?

BTW I am out-of-state for both, so that is not an issue.

Both are awesome schools; I would just go to Michigan since it seems to have a bit more prestige. It is what most people would consider as a tier one public.

That's a tough decision. Both are excellent overall and both have strong Biology departments. Both will do a great job in offering research opportunities and both will get you into medical school. Michigan is slightly more "prestigious" but, with roughly $10,000 less in tuition, Wisconsin is a better value.

It is important to note that the reason why Michigan is more prestigious than Wisconsin is thanks to its graduate professional programs, primarily Business, Law and Medicine. It is also important to note that for Biology majors intending to go on to Medical school, this added prestige will not help in the least. If one were interested in pursuing a career on Wall Street or on applying to Law school, I would say Michigan may provide a slight advantage. However, for premeds, Wisconsin will do great, as will Michigan.

Wisconsin has more to offer in the biosciences and is $10,000 cheaper right now. The support for bio research at UW is the best in the US. Many would say the campus is nicer.

U Wisconsin is probably going to provide a better UG experience, especially because you'll be saving $40k which you can use for med school...at least, med school application fees (which are something like $200, no?)

Thanks for all the input, guys! I've already visited Wisconsin, as my sister went there, and while I do like the campus, I'm not sure if it's right for me.

I'm attending one of the "Campus Days" for accepted students at Michigan in about two weeks, so hopefully I like their campus better! I hear Ann Arbor is a great town, so I can't wait.
