Michigan

Hello. I am a white male from NYC, and I am looking at Michigan. I have ok grades at a really good private school (Our school doesn't calculate GPAs, but I did it online and mine is a 3.52), and my SAT scores are really good, I have a 2210-750 reading, 720 math, 740 writing.
So what sort of chance do I have at Michigan with that?
Also will being out of state really hurt me?

Some additional stuff(just a little bit)
- 3 Sport Varsity athlete, Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Baseball(4 years varsity on that).
- Summer paid internship at a hospital.
- Bunch of clubs.
- Sat IIs, 690 Math 1, 760 History.

Being out of state definitely doesn’t help you, that’s for sure. All in all your SAT is competitive for michigan, but your GPA isn’t so great. It will really depend on your class ranking. Recalculate your GPA the michigan way (ignore freshmen year and only count academic courses, like math, science, history, lit, and foreign language) assigning any As (minuses and pluses don’t matter) a 4, Bs a 3, Cs a 2, etc. and then averaging them. The average recalculated GPA at Michigan is a 3.8, with an average of 29 on the ACT (your SAT score is higher than their average).

Ultimately, if your recalculated GPA is under a 3.6, I would say as an out of state applicant you have a 50/50 chance of admission with your SAT. Boost your chances with a great essay and great recs and you might be a wolverine next year! Go blue.

So, I did my GPA the Michigan way and came up with a 3.55. Also my school doesn’t have class rankings. So I probably have a 50/50 chance?

^It would really make a difference on how people from previous years from you school got into what schools with what GPA. Ask around about people who got into Michigan last year.

The average Michigan GPA is actually a 3.9. Michigan really cares about GPA-it is probably the most important thing. Being OOS will make it a definite reach.

^ Michigan does care about GPA, but they mainly care about GPA distribution, meaning rank. If you have a 3.55 and are in the top 10% or 15% of your class than you are actually pretty competitive. If a 3.55 only puts you in the top 50%, then Michigan is a pretty big reach. I would ask your guidance counselor about the GPA distribution at your school and where you approximately fall.

if michigan has early application options, i would take them to boost your chances

If you REALLY want UMichigan, then apply ED. That might offset the fact you are out of state.

Should i just apply really early in the rolling admissions process because they just have rolling admissions?

^ Yeah. They don’t have ED or EA, but in speaking with a UMichigan admissions counselor I was told that applying early boosts your chances a lot. In the beginning they are just looking for people to fill seats, and they like to fill seats as they get applicants. If you wait until later in the process there are a lot more applicants, all of whom are competing against you, whereas early on you have much fewer competitors. She said like 50% of the freshmen class is usually filled by November, whereas the majority of the applications are received after November, meaning that applying early = better chances :)
