I am very academically driven but the social scene is also a big part of my life so i was just wondering wat the greek life is like in michigan, if the party scene is tite, and if every one is nice and the races blend together well here

mich is not a party school but u will find them if u look for them. most ppl are nice...well, it depends, let's just say u have the opportunity to meet nice ppl. races DO NOT blend well together here though

cherrybarry I think you should have encountered something miserable brought by the conflict between races....

cherrybarry: what do you mean by races do not blend well together here?

Greek! Greek! Greek! Lots of Greek.

I would also say the party scene is tite.. verry tite, like a tiger ;) lol

cherry's got a point...like everyone is nice to each other and stuff but like the asians will stick together, the indians, Muslims, African Americans and such tend to all stick together in their own groups...it doesn't mean we're hostile to each other or anything and it certainly doesnt mean they dont have friends of other races, its just that they feel more comfortable within their own group

umardarr your reply relieved my concern.....

umardarr is quite right. There isn't a lot of mixing between races at Michigan. Then again, there isn't much mixing of races at most universities. It is too bad really, because diversity is one of Michigan's strengths.

Like, would it be easily for a chinese guy like me to mingle with white kids if I have similar interests such as sports, partying, etc?

Of course, man. I have never seen one racial group not accept another. The reason there isn't more "intermingling" is because people are too lazy to leave their comfort zone and dare to hang out with people of another race. However, I hear Michigan is about average in this department among all universities. It's just a trend inherent to human existence I think. Path of least resistance sort of thing. If you make the effort to hang out with white people, they'll love it, no questions asked.

Maguo, Michigan students aren't cliquish or racist. There isn't much integration because students don't make the effort. However, if a student likes to mix things up, the opportunities are certainly there. Students at Michigan are generally accepting and tolerant.

well, i'm asian and i have both white friends and asian friends and realbeast but i forgot what race he was lol

So, you really don't think it's a problem at all?

im paki...muslim...thanks man, haha

There's no problem at all. I've attended and performed at rap shows where I'm the only white guy and last night I watched White. Black with 30 black individuals, and everything was fine, and the black community isn't the only one that welcomes other races.

People are incredibly accepting and tolerant of other races here. Diversity is touted as one of our strengths in just about every realm on campus and we see that as a huge asset. The frat scene is pretty insular from my experience. Frats and sororities tend to mix amongst each other. Your freshman year is important because you will often make very good friends amongst your hall mates. What I love about Michigan is that people work really hard here but are still willing to have a good time whenever they can. Fun is not frowned upon here!

University of Michigan is very diverse, but the city of ann arbor (and the surrounding areas), not so much.

Umich is an awesome place ethnically

Again, most people tend to hang out with/in their own ethnicities, but its only becuase they're lazy...

I know i wont be one of those lazy fokls! ;)

hahaha we all have friends of different ethnicities and such...I think what tends to happen is that people will go to the clubs relating to their own ethnicities at the beginning of the year...like I would probably go to the Muslim Student Association or there are Asian American clubs, Indian clubs....and so on, so they make a load of friends in their group right there...its only natural
