Microbiology as major?

How come very few colleges actually have a micro major? If i apply to a college that doesn't have it. Do i just select biology? And also, if i really want to major in micro, do i have to a 'create my own major' kind of deal?

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of school offering Microbiology as a major. Try Googling on “undergraduate microbiology programs” or some such search string.

Or use a college search tool and enter your major -

Also, many universities have a micro concentration within the bio major. So search on “microbiology concentration”…
Here is an example, U.Mich. http://www.lsa.umich.edu/biology/academics/concentrationsminors/microbiology</a></p>

Sometimes it can hard to find the microbiology major on a school’s website.
Most landgrant public universities offer a major in this field, but it might be found in the ag school, e.g., [Microbiology | College of Agricultural and Life Sciences ? University of Wisconsin-Madison](Microbiology – Agricultural & Life Sciences) Some schools offer it as a subspeciality option in a general biology dept, e.g., [Undergraduate | Department of Biological Sciences | University of Pittsburgh](Undergraduate | Department of Biological Sciences | University of Pittsburgh). Some schools have a free-standing microbiology department in their college of arts & sciences. Some schools combine microbiology with another department such as molecular biology, genetics, or cell biology, or even botany. The micro dept. at some schools is in the medical or vet school, though sometimes they offer an undergrad major, e.g., [Department of Microbiology :: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine](http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/microbiology/major/), <a href=“UW Microbiology Home | UW Microbiology”>UW Microbiology Home | UW Microbiology, [Microbiology Undergraduate Program](<a href=“Undergraduate Programs – College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences”>Undergraduate Programs – College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences), [Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology | University of Wisconsin-Madison](<a href=“Medical Microbiology & Immunology – University of Wisconsin – Madison – UW–Madison”>Medical Microbiology & Immunology – University of Wisconsin – Madison – UW–Madison), [Programs of Study - MED - Microbiology Department, University of Minnesota](http://www.microbiology.med.umn.edu/programs/home.html)
