Microfridge v. Mini fridge

My daughter is debating on whether or not to get micro fridge. Some current sophomores have stated that the microwave is not really useful. Any thoughts from current students or parents of current students?

My daughter and her roommate are opting for the mini fridge. They were on the fence about the microwave until they realized they will have access to one in the dorm kitchen and also because it would be one more thing they would need to clean. I believe they, too, heard from older students who said an in room microwave really isn’t necessary.

My son’s roommate ordered the microfridge and they split the cost. He was out of his dorm with friends or studying most of the time, so he probably would have been fine without the microwave. For us, the benefit of ordering the microfridge was the convenience it provided since we arrived by plane and it was one less thing we needed to buy and store over the summer.

That was our thought too. My daughter has an international student roommate who will be unable to bring a fridge so either we buy a smaller one or rent microfridge. I know space is a premium in these rooms so that is a factor as well.

I would say it’s not worth it. I went for the mini fridge freshman year and never found myself needing a microwave. The microfridge is smaller too I believe (For the fridge part at least).

Plus, if you ever have leftovers or something and desperately need a microwave chances are someone on your floor will have a microfridge (or you could just use the one in the dorm lounge).

I have to agree with Phillipb22. My son and his roommate split one freshman year. It is pretty large and all they really used it for was a few drinks. They vrtually never used the microwave.

After that, he just brought a mini fridge until he got into an apartment with a kitchen.

I asked my son about the microfridge they had. He said he used it for popcorn and hot chocolate occasionally, but several friends on the same floor had a microfridge, too. The microwave function of it didn’t seem to be used much, but they did use the refrigerator part of it. We didn’t want to deal with buying a mini refrigerator or storing it, but if someone lives driving distance, I can see where buying a mini refrigerator and borrowing a microwave for the occasional use would be an attractive option.
