I have a Mac.
Should I buy Microsoft Office for Mac, or
should I buy a Windows operating system to run on my Mac
and buy Office for Windows?

you should go back in time, get a PC instead of a Mac, save $500 while having a better/same machine at the same time, never have to worry about compatibility issues, and not be a hipster who writes a novel at starbucks while bragging about his vinyl collection.

yes i am stereotyping, but the stereotypes come from somewhere.

LOL. Nothing against stereotyping, but I think yours might be a bit ‘off’. I understand that they may not be the best computers for everybody, but my Mac is the right computer for my needs (plus I got a great deal on it).

Anybody else have any insight?

If you’re not a graphic designer or a dubstep music maker, I dont see the point.

Carry on, however.

If you have money to blow, Macs offer the “whole package” in terms of aesthetic beauty, user interface (gesture support, for example), and the Retina display (if you choose that option).

I’ve used Office on a Mac and PC, and for some reason I think the PC version is a lot easier. But then again that was on Windows Basic, not whatever the current OS is.

And I’d have to argue that Macs are better than PCs in every way possible, and definitely worth the extra investment. I’ve had my iMac 24" since '08 and it still runs like the day I unboxed it. My dad got a new PC about a year ago and it runs almost as slow as the (now 13 year old) computer that it replaced. The only bad thing I can think of on the Mac is actually the iWork programs (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) aren’t as easy to use as Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, Excel).

domrom1, I actually do make music on it. :)

JeremyS, thanks for the input. Is the difference between the two versions a big deal?

I just want to know whether it’s worth it to save ~$100 now if it won’t be a huge difference for accounting and finance-related work. Not sure how complex things can get in business school and post-school or how comfortable I need to be with certain software to complete tasks.

Bump…

Anybody else?

Since you mention finance/business/accounting, apparently from what I’ve heard, Excel for Mac uses completely different keyboard shortcuts / layout than Excel for Windows, and for that reason alone I would advise getting Office for Windows.

Get Office for Windows because you can run Windows on Mac, but cannot run Mac’s Office on Windows.

Buy a PC and buy Windows for it. Most business classes use PC Windows for Excel and sometimes there are problems sending files to professors (PC) on a Mac.
