I have several friends who will be sophomores and above at Cal, and from the pictures I have seen of their dorms, most of them had microwaves, fridges, coffee makers, hot water boiling pots, and toasters.

On the cal what to bring site: UC Berkeley Fall 2010 - Residence Hall Move In

it states that we cannot bring these items, and that we need to purchase the fridge and microwave from the rental plans listed here: Micro 101 Solutions, Inc. :: UCB Order Page

Is this necessary? And does that also mean that coffee makers, hot water boiling pots, and toasters are contraband items, and people just ignore the rules and bring them in?

If that's true, I will be very sad. I like my pop tarts warm and crispy :(

yeah you can bring any/all those things… you should probably try coordinating with your roommates though lol

yeah i did haha, but the list of what not to bring kind of freaked me out.

yay i get to eat my pop tarts

Technically you are not supposed to have those things. Whether your RA pretends you don’t have those things is between the RA, you, and your roommates.

microwaves - yes
fridges - yes
coffee makers - no
hot water boiling pots - no, unless it’s a completely closed unit with no exposed heating components
toasters - no

Maybe your RA won’t care, but your RAs will do room checks at the end of every semester, most likely with their boss, the RD. Not to mention, all RAs can oversee room condition. To be safe, just don’t bring anything that can cause a fire…

The first time one of those triggers the smoke detectors and causes the entire building to be emptied, you will not be smiling. Thus, don’t cause a fire and don’t do anything that will create a lot of smoke.

If the RA or other staff come into the dorm room, or can see in while your door is open, they could raise an issue with any contraband cooking gear that is visible. On the other hand, they are not going to search. Anything that is under a cover of some kind is safely invisible.

^ Yeah, RAs aren’t allowed to look under covers or inside cabinets. Still, keep away from things with open heating elements.
