Microwave/Mini-Fridge

So I read on Cornell's site that they only permit microwaves and fridges from their approved vendor, but that costs $499 compared to a good mini fridge ($150) and microwave ($75) online from like Amazon. Would I be able to get away with my own appliances in a single?

You should just get a mini fridge. There are kitchens on every floor in most dorms and they have microwaves, so you can just use those. You can get a perfectly functional fridge from Walmart for less than $100 bucks. Just make sure it’s reasonably close to the wattage reqs (those should also be on the website).

I couldn’t find the wattage reqs… Do you think this would be okay?
Yeah, probably. It’s not like they really check anyways :p

They do room checks. What we did for our kid freshman year was to rent a microwave fridge unit for a year. I think it was around $100. They delivered it and picked it from her room. The reason we decided to rent rather buy was most students live off campus after freshman year, so most likely she wouldn’t need a fridge after freshman year.

I already have a minifridge. They say on their site having your own fridge (but not microwave) is okay as long as it complies with the Cornell wattage requirements, but doesn’t provide those requirements. Does anyone know where I might be able to find those?

As stated before, they really don’t check the wattage on your refrigerator, but:

“a minifridge or a microfridge (microwave-refrigerator combination): you can rent one here (if you purchase a minifridge, please make sure it draws no more than 3 amps [300 watts] to start and 1.5 amps while running)”

You can’t have any microwave unless you rent the combo. You can have the small refrigerator by buying. We ended up spending another $70 at the end of the year to let a storage company move the refrigerator into storage for summer. The car was going to be really full and we didn’t want to deal with that. Don’t forget to factor that into your costs. Unless you really like moving that refrigerator each year. Ours was sort of big, but was a good deal at Costco last year (less than $200).
