Hello everyone! As you take placement tests and pack for school, I'm gearing up for another round of applications galore. I'll probably be starting at the local high school this fall, and to make sure I don't fall behind, I want to schedule summer interviews at schools that are a little ways away. I had this nice 5-school trip all planned out for this summer until I read that 3 of these schools don't do interviews when school is not in session. I still want to visit the other 2, but how should I go about applying to those 3? If I can't make it down again during a long weekend in the fall, should I plan on Skype?

Also, do you have any good Mid-Atlantic schools I should look at? Thanks! :)

Personally, I think it’s always best to visit the school when it is in session, to give you a true sense of the school, but understand that logistically it is not always possible. From personal experience, the schools I visited that did not have summer interviews were crossed off my list, although that was not the primary reason. If you can’t make it back during the academic year, you should plan on a skype or phone interview.

As diligent as you are, I am sure that you have researched schools that will fit your needs, so my suggestions would be redundant. I will tell you that some of the schools I considered were Lawrenceville, Blair, Episcopal, and SAS.

What about Peddie, Hill, and Mercersburg?

Thanks! Hill and Episcopal are the only ones that weren’t already on my list. :)

I second Mercersburg.

Yup, that’s there! We’d planned a route for Blair, Lawrenceville, Peddie, Mercersburg, and St. Andrew’s, and I want to add Hill and Episcopal.

It looks like I’ll have a 5-day weekend at the end of September that might work! My brother might add some colleges to look at too. :)

Hey Stargirl, we were initially going to do a summer tour. We found that some of the schools that say they don’t do summer tours will do so if you call. I’d give it a try if you are still interested in checking out schools in the summer.

@calrenoma I might call sometime this week to see if they’ll accomodate me, but it might be better to go after spending a few weeks at my new school. :)

Edit: I might say might way too much. :p

When you come to Lawrenceville, PM me.

For some reason, I always thought your brother was younger.

@skieurope Nah, although I sometimes act like it. :x

@mrnephew Seeing you would be a benefit of coming in the fall! I’ll definitely PM you to your heart’s content. :p

We visited Hill and had some misgivings about the culture. Minor things, but I will PM you so you can decide whether they matter to you.

Personally I wouldnt suggest skype because its not as personal and you cant connect as well as you could in a face to face interview. I didnt get accepted to any school I did skype interviews for. Try and do face to face interviews

I didn’t get accepted to any school I Skyped with, but I also didn’t get in anywhere where I interviewed on campus. Thanks everyone!

@stargirl3 DS just completed his freshman year at EHS. As some folks already know, for many reasons, I am a big cheerleader. I am pretty sure that upon special request tours are available during the summer. What makes EHS truly unique is their Washington Program. Starting next fall the school will roll out its most sophisticated version yet of the Washington Program. You can read about the history and future of the program here. Best of luck to you!

Already inquired at EHS! Thanks! :D

@Stargirl3: Please don’t fret about Skype interviews. As you well know, many applicants do get accepted (and denied or WL) via Skype interviews. Just as they do with on campus or alumni interviews. While I prefer on campus interviews, I understand they are not always possible for all applicants. Distance, cost, and numerous other factors may prevent an applicant from visiting a campus in person. The schools would not offer various forms of interviews if they did not feel they were viable. My child received 3 offers of admission from Skype interviews and 1 from an alumni interview.

I can also attest to the fact that kids do get admissions offers from schools that they skyped with!
