Mid semester entrance

So I'm coming over to IU soon after taking a semester break off after my freshman year of a pretty ****ty college. At my old college we only have 3 dorms and I stayed in the dorm that held a majority of the freshman, so it was easy to meet people...however IU is a completely different ballpark.

How would you guys say is the easiest way to meet new people at IU?
Which frats are the coolest with newcomers?
What places around campus do people chill at?
Can I drive my car to class?
Wheres the bud? ;) Nah just playin.

My most important question, which dorms do you recommend for partyin/outgoing/chill people?

If you’re starting this semester, don’t you already know where you’re living? Besides that, any dorm in the Northwest neighborhood, particularily McNutt, will be outgoing. The dorms in the Central neighborhood are more “normal” and the quieter dorms are in the Southeast neighborhood. If you’re an upperclassmen though… why are you living on campus? The legit parties are in off campus apartments or houses and the dorms don’t quite contend.

The easiest way to meet people was being one in 7,000 people on move in day who doesn’t know anyone. Since that’s not you, I’ll say what everyone else does and say to join a club. If you don’t wanna do that, spring rush starts shortly after we get back from break. But I hear it’s more competitive than Fall rush unless you know someone in one of the frats.

Any frat is the same whether you’re a newcomer or not, but some of the “Top Tier” frats at IU are Beta, Delta Chi, Kappa Sig, Acacia, while the lower-tier includes Theta, Skulls, and Sig Ep, which are still good but not appreciated as much. But like I said, Spring Rush is harder if you don’t have connections, which I’m assuming you don’t since you’re new.

Most freshman chill in their dorm rooms, especially when it’s cold. When it’s nice out, people walk around outside. People don’t leave campus that often.

There’s no need to drive to class, and there’s no where to park anyways. Campus isn’t as big as everyone thinks. If you were to walk across campus (say from Swain West to Eigenmann), which people regard as pretty damn far, it’d take 20-25 minutes tops. Plus there’s a bus system, but it’s not the most reliable.

You should be fine starting half way through the year. 95% of people at IU are incredibly awesome and nice, and making friends shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.

Thanks man. As ridiculous as it may be I’ve been holding out on making my dorm choice because I’ve literally had no idea what to choose. I’ve been keeping my eye on Union apartments but I have a feeling it will be hard to get in to.

My last dorm had commons on each floor with TVs so you could always meet new people by setting up a gaming system and inviting random people to play, is this a possibility with most dorms/apartments at IU?

How is the parking at the dorms? I heard freshman are forced to park at the stadium, so I’m wondering if I’m eligible for dorm parking now that I’ll be coming in as a Sophomore. Also, any reports of vehicle vandalism and such?

Oh, I misunderstood and thought you were starting this semester as in like 10 days from now. You still have plenty of time for housing. Being a transfer student, you probably wanna live on campus just to meet more people and Union Street and Campus View will be the most legit options, and most of the other on campus apartments are pretty close to the frats so if you’re rushing it should work out pretty solid. Remember though, a lot of IU’s on campus apartments are 2-bedroom, so you’ll need to find a roommate. But with facebook and all, it shouldn’t be hard. I think Union Street and Evermann have one-bedroom, but Evermann has no AC. I’ve never been to Union Street other than their C-Store, but campus view is really nice and not terribly expensive. You really shouldn’t have a problem getting into Union Street if you apply now. (Assuming you’re already accepted to IU)

As far as gaming, in my dorm we all have our Xbox’s wired and we have mass gaming sessions all the time, and it’s awesome. If you walk down the hall in any dorm, all you year is COD coming from basically every room. In my dorm, Foster, we don’t have TV’s in the floor lounges but people are always willing to game in the rooms. It’s a huge deal here. Bring the Xbox, the more the better.

As far as parking, it’s a win or lose deal. You’ll either get an E permit (stadium parking only) or a D Permit, which allows you to park at or near your dorm. If you’re living in the Northwest neighborhood, the E permit isn’t a total bust because you’re already pretty close to the stadium. If you’re Centeal of Southeast and you have the E permit, you either have to ride the A-Bus for like 40 minutes or walk a mile. I’m in Foster which is in Northwest, and my car is at the Stadium and it usually takes about 5-7 minutes to walk there, and 1-2 minutes if you can catch the A-Bus. The D permits are harder to get, but a lot of people start the semester with E permits and randomly get upgraded to D in the middle of the semester. If you live in an on campus apartment, I’m not sure where you park or what permit you get. There aren’t any parking lots at Union Street, but north of 10th street from Union Street and south of the SRSC there’s a huge D Lot so I think you could park there. But don’t quote me on that.

Hahahahaha wait, what?! I hate to be a b***h, but Delta Chi is the furthest thing from top tier, Kappa Sig is middle tier at best, and Theta is…a sorority. You’re not going to be partying at any decent fraternity unless you’re rushing in the spring.

^ Sorry, I was referring to Theta Chi, not “Theta.” I’m a noob as far as the greek system goes, I only rushed Sig Ep and they don’t interact much. And as far as who’s “top tier,” it depends who you ask. The guys in Skulls admitted to being low-tier the day they were at Dunn Meadow, and I know everyone hates on Sig Ep.

I might have been thinking Sigma Chi… whichever one is on 7th street. They have a really nice house.

^ Sigma Chi’s on 7th street. That’s probably the one you were referring to.

Alright I chose Northwest/Central as priority a few days ago, but being this late in the game I’ll probably be assigned a dorm across town.

Wow that sounds awesome. Thank god for gamers at IU. It’ll be a nice change of scenery.

I have orientation on the 6th so I’ll have to do all of my class scouting then or on moving day. Is it really a 40 minute bus from South to North?

^ For the bus, it depends. If you live in Central and wanna go to the stadium, you get on the ‘A’ bus at the Library and it makes a loop around campus and traffic tends to get really backed up and it’s actually quicker walking. 40 might be an exaggeration, but I’ve defnitely spent 25 minutes on the bus before. But if you do choose to walk, it’s all uphill haha

^^ It’s only January, you still stand a good chance of getting into your first-choice housing. There are a lot of people yet to apply.

^ I think he’s starting this semester, as in like 6 days from now. But I’m not positive either.

Yeah I’m starting up in 6 days. You guys happen to know how many people leave mid-semester? My last college dropped quite a bit and there weren’t that many to begin with.

I can think of a handful of people I know that left IU after first semester freshman year, you should be totally fine.

Just got my assignment to Teter: Boisen. Not bad, not bad at all.

^ Teter is the best dorm on campus, according to me and a lot of other people. You lucked out.
