Lately, since I will have my "Abitur" by June of this year, I've been
considering to apply to Harvard or some other Ivies. While surfing
the website of Harvard, I didn't seem to fully understand the following thing:

Are 'Mid-Year reports' really mandatory even though you hand in your secondary
school report? If they were, that would not really make any sense whatsoever.
I know that this sounds like a stupid question because it's so obvious, but unlike
other universities, Harvard did not exclude a Mid-Year report explicitly once a
Secondary School Report is available (as far as I could see).

Thanks for all of your answers, but to clarify:

As I’m attending a German secondary school, there are absolutely no differences
between the “Mid-Year report” / “Halbjahreszeugnis” that I get in February, and the
“Secondary School report” / “Abitur” that I get by the end of June. The only difference is that on the document (‘Abitur’), there will be my final results. Apart from that, the same results
as they were listed on my ‘Halbjahreszeugnis’ (in this case ‘Mid-Year report’)
are listed once again.

So do you get my point or am I just too stupid to get what you’re saying?
Can I probably neglect the Mid-Year report as a German then?

Okay I decided to break it down now, the German Abitur basically consists of 4 semesters and thus it displays the performance of 2 years:
12.1 + 12.2 (1st year)
13.1 + 13.2 (2nd year)

A mid-year report would include the grades of 12.1 + 12.2 + 13.1 whereas the Abitur displays all of the grades, adding 13.2 to the mid-year report.

Even in your situation, I would assume that the MidYear Report is required. It provides the admissions committee with information that wasn’t available when you first applied (I assume the 13.1 grades). This could help the admissions committee with their decisions if you are on the bubble.

If you are admitted and choose to attend, you must also submit the Final Report, which includes information about your 13.2 grades. This is to verify that you continue to meet Harvard’s academic standards. If, for example, you suddenly start failing all of your courses, and Harvard sees that on your final report, they have the right to rescind your offer of admission.

I’m sort of in the same situation as you. My school follows the British A Levels system and apparently, what they do is submit the same thing over and over again. So yes, they do submit the Mid Year Report but it’s just a repeat of the Secondary School Report (if I’m not wrong). It sounds redundant, I know, but it’s the way it is I guess.

Okay lutherjw, I forgot to mention an important bit of information: I haven’t even applied to Harvard yet, I’ve only recently decided that going abroad after my Abitur is what I want.

In this case, when I apply in August of this year for an enrollment in 2012, it really wouldn’t make ANY sense to submit a midyear-report because the Abitur is available by June. So, is it clear now? And would you say that this midyear thing is still required? And, most importantly, is it actually possible to apply to Harvard after you graduated or do they not want people to take a break of one year and thus decline anyone who has already graduated,
