Sorry for the redundancy- there are probably a million posts on this already. Just need a few clear answers.

Is the mid-year report an average of first and second quarter grades or do colleges see them separately? Do early action schools see mid-year reports, just first quarter grades, or nothing? What about regular decision?

The mid year report requires your counselor to enter your new rank, if you have a new rank, your new updated cumulative high school gpa and attach a transcript of your fall term grades. It also asks whether there have been changes to your senior year schedule, disciplinary or criminal history. Finally, it allows the counselor to provide changes to the counselor recommendation, if they wish.

RD schools will generally require the mid year report, if the counselor’s school report doesn’t include them. (Many counselors save themselves work by not sending RD materials until after fall grades are in.) ED and EA schools will ask for your fall grades or a mid-term report about your grades, if your grades are at all a concern to them. That’s routinely done informally by a phone call or email directly to your counselor.

Thanks. One of my Early action schools says they require a mid-year report… does this mean that they’re going to make their decision based off of 9-11 and just see that after I’ve been accepted or what? Could they still ask about first quarter grades alone?

In our school our first quarter grades are automatically sent to all early action and early decision schools. Mid year report is also sent but more important for regular decision schools. If you did especially well 1st quarter I would make sure every school sees them. They do need to be official so it needs to be sent from the school not you.
