Ok so I was looking at the Mid Year Report from the Common App and I saw that all it includes is your updated GPA and class rank. Is this the only thing that colleges will see or am I missing something? Will they not ever see the specific grades that you received your senior semester? Like would they never know if you got 6 As & 1 C or 5 As & 2Bs etc? It doesn't seem like that would make much sense

The final college you choose require a final transcript, so yes they will see specific grades.

No that’s not what I’m talking about. I mean for the mid year report, or as far as college DECISIONS matter, will they never see your specific grades for regular decision? When they’re deciding to accept or reject you, is all they’ll see an updated GPA and class rank? No specific 1st semester grades? Seriously, 500 views and no one knows? I would think it’s kind of an important topic that applies to everyone

My kids’ high school sent an updated transcript, including first-semester grades for senior-year classes, with the mid-year report.

I assumed all high schools do this. For that matter, I assumed that all colleges that wanted a mid-year report wanted an updated transcript.

And, FWIW, my kids’ school didn’t send an updated class rank. They ranked the class once and only once, at the end of 11th grade.

Hm I didn’t know this. My counselor just said that they “send the midyear report” and made no mention of also sending a new transcript. Thanks for clearing that up though, it’s a relief to know :)

^^^exactly what Sikorsky said is how our school does it.

A “midyear report” for the common app that is sent by the counselor consists of the form you noted plus a transcript. Counselors generally know that since if you go on a college’s site for a college that requires a mid-year report you will see that what is required includes a transcript containing at least the first semester senior year grades.

The HSs in our area send updated transcripts as well. These include not only the student’s individual course grades but also test scores that have been reported to the school and school-related ECs.

Off-topic, but Niceday’s post illustrates why students should not have College Board or ACT report scores to their high schools.

If the testing service reports the scores, they’ll go on the transcripts (in schools that record them there) and then be sent out to colleges. If the student doesn’t have the scores reported to his or her high school, then the student retains a little bit more control over what information gets shared.

^ However, the vast majority of schools state they will only use the highest scores provided so it should not affect the app. There are also some schools that require ALL scores be sent and this is a way to help verify that.

The contributers who talk about a first-semester transcript (or official grade report, in my school’s case) are right. Grades go to colleges along with the mid-year report.

Unless there is some kind of change in performance, or disciplinary status, no other remarks are requested on the Common App school MYRs any more. They used to be a lot more involved.
