My son really has his heart set on going to Virginia Tech for Architecture. His grades qualify him for that school (hopefully) however,on his mid year transcript he took a nosedive. His first quarter was great, the second quarter he was sick a lot (had mono) and his grades really went down because he missed a lot of school. They do not know he was sick and they will just see that his grades went down. Any suggestions as to what to do?

You might want to talk to the guidance counselor and see if they will enclose a letter of explanation with the official transcript… They could mention illness and absences during 2Q if appropriate.

At a lot of colleges, the mid year transcript is a part of the Mid Year Report filled out by the counselor. The counselor is able to update/add to her recommendation, report any new suspensions, etc. I think having the counselor explain the illness issue in her part of the paperwork should do the trick.

If the college only wants a transcript sent, I’d have the counselor write a little note and attach it to the transcript.
