Hello everyone, I am curious to know if any of you could help me out with this dilemma I am currently in.

This past semester, I had to withdraw from my university out of state because I could not afford to stay, along with some other financial problems I am dealing with. I was also academically dismissed. I was wondering if I should transfer to a university that is in my home state for the upcoming Spring semester, or just go to community college for one semester then transfer in the Fall. Would it look bad on my resume in the future if I went to a CC for one semester? Would I have to show the school I transfer to, the two transcripts from the previous colleges? Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Yes they will see all transcripts but in fact if you transferred to a cc you would request your current college send that to the cc for admittance. Thereafter, the cc will send the records to whatever college you desire next.
I think only you can answer how best to handle your financial situation. I don’t feel there is enough info to make an informed decision. A cc would be less expensive and I assume you can live at home. Your academic dismissal might be a red flag. You would have to prove that is in your past by a solid gpa and full term workload.
Good luck!!

Thanks for the response Shiloh77

The financial problem is not the biggest concern for me. Its an outstanding balance from my previous college, and a hospital bill that amounts to a full total of about $3500. I am working and I plan to get a consolidated personal loan to pay off those expenses.

I really just want to know if it would be necessary to go to a community college for one semester or transfer to an in-state university. I have already spoken to the in-state registrar, all they need is my transcript.

Zesty, I echo shiloh, there isn’t enough to make a solid call. You know your situation best. I WILL say that after my dismal, 1.52GPA, $20,000 first year at a private school, I gained some much needed confidence and clarity after attending a local cc for a bit. The mistakes of the past are explainable, and as said, if you show improvement that is what will count!

Are you even sure you could transfer to your state college mid year? When you spoke to them, were they aware of the academic dismissal on your transcript? Will you have met their minimum GPA for transfer admissions? Even if this was not an issue, I’d tell you to spend at least a semester at your CC and get your finances and yourself together and your grades up before going away going to your state university. Don’t worry about what it will look like! Just worry about setting yourself up to succeed for when you ultimately do transfer.

justlookingnow, no they were not aware of the academic dismissal. But that is fine, I decided to not go there anyway. The transition would have been too much of a hassle.

I really appreciate the advice from all of you guys, I am taking this semester at a CC. The faculty at the local college has been so helpful with my transition to the environment. I may even stay there for an entire year to save a bunch of aid money since I intend to go to grad school after I get a bachelor’s degree. I will need all the financial aid I can get…now I will just take this time to redeem myself. Thanks!
