To johnwesley’s post — Middlebury dropped form 7 to 11 in 2004 (not from 6 to 11). Here is its US News overall rankings the past 8 years (not that anyone cares):

7, 7, 11, 8, 5, 5, 5, 4

No one is criticizing Midd. If wonderful students, natural beauty and great location were figured into the ranking, Midd would be, in my opinion, #1

Sorry JohnWesley. Love your college, father is an alum, but…

The issue has more to do with USNWR than Midd. Think about it, Midd changes their SAT scores an inappreciable 50 points and the ranking jumps from 11 to 5…I imagine there are statisticians at the top LACs franticly running computer models to ascertain which reporting stat they can tweak to accomplish the same feat.

‘Ohhhh, lorddddd, will it never end!!’

in some ways it will only end when we stop paying attention to it, or placing such huge value and meaning in these numbers. sadly, this thread suggests it will, indeed, never end. for whatever reason, we seem to care about this stuff and perpetuate the notion.

Morandi, 200 years ago, a brilliant statesman said, “An association of men who will not quarrel with one another is a thing which has never yet existed, from the greatest confederacy of nations down to a town meeting or a vestry.”

Some things never change. Although, if Jefferson were speaking today, he would be wise to include women in his statement.

ah, don’t limit yourself, crewdad. let’s keep aiming high!!
