Iranian-American going to Dartmouth: Hi all!

What are you guys taking with you? And how do you intend to transport the larger things, like, say, a computer?

Devious, I took very ltitle with me. Your clothes will not do you much good, nor will a computer. I would buy a new computer, TV, DVD player etc... in Canada. You will also have to buy a good waterproof winter coat, a good hat that covers your ears and good waterproof boots. Finally, you will have to buy a table/bedside lamp, heavy-duty alarm (mine could wake up the entire building) and other little stuff. But get all of those things in Canada.

As far as what to pack, just take your generic clothes (shirts, jeans, shoes, etc...) with you. And do not forget to prepare and pack a photo album of all your loved ones. It will keep you warm on a cold, homesick night.

How did you all provide suficient funding to move there ?

We don't have to overtake the Indian thread at all - we can easily kill it by posting headlines of the recent Pakistani cricket victory. They'll all stop posting in protest, LOL. :D

nt: Awesome! Duke is a superb school. I'm going to Stanford as I said in my original post :) Well done to all of you - the application process was horribly long-drawn out and I'm glad we all got through.

About the Kuwaiti govt. scholarship - the merit scholarships are amazing, but available to Kuwaitis only, sadly. All you have to do to get it is get into a top univeristy on the specified major's list - check out kuwaitculture.com to see what I mean. Often the universities listed are good universities with high admit rates (Indiana at Bloomington, Ohio State, UCD, etc). Then there are the moderately selective ones (UCSD, for example) and finally the highly selective ones such as the Ivies, MIT, Stanford. The lists comprise of a good mix of universities with the three selectivity rates. But this is for Kuwaitis living here - I don't know anything about their scholarships to Bahraini students. PS: Kuwait University sucks. It has to be said.

Alexandre - I'm a quarter Lebanese (LOL) on my gran's side. I spent the summer in Hamana and still dream about the food.

Keep posting, guys!

nkay: oops..Sorry..I have short-term memory problems..lol Stanford is amazing! Congrats!
And hey...I am Indian after all..no dissing 'my' thread! ;)

LOL! That reminds me of something that happened at school. Last year, a huge group of my classmates and I piled up into a bus to go to the local stadium for our sports day. At the time, there was that heated cricket match between India and Pakistan. I turned around in the bus and saw one of my Pakistani friends behind me and said "Go Pakistan!" without realising that, apart from him, EVERYONE else in the bus was Indian! I only noticed that after this torrent of roars washed down upon me, haha :D

Congrats to you, too! Anyone else in Oman get into Duke as well?

Poor guy! I can just imagine the scene..lol ;)

Noone else from Oman. I'm all alone! But that's ok.

What about you? Anyone else going to Stanford?

Great post, Alexandre. Thanks. :D

any other middle easterns going to Georgetown??!

Yep, one other girl from another school got in and is going. I think that's it, though.

my dad is half sudanese...does that count? his mom who was sudanese was arab sudanese, spoke arabic, etc.....so middle eastern, or still african?

I don't think that Sudan counts as a middle eastern country, but oh well :-)

:/ , well, it isnt geographically, but wouldnt it be culturally?i hear some international organizations classify all arab countries as mid eastern. but yea..wtvr....im going to UNC CH next yr , hit up the african thread if u have the time :) paaayce

I think Sudan qualifies as a Middle Eastern Country. All Semetic countries (including Ethiopia) are considered part of the Near East and the countries flanking the Red sea are generally considered to be part of the Middle East.
