Middle Name and Extracurricular

Common App says to include my name "exactly" as it appears on all legal documents. My passport, social security card, birth certificate, etc... all include my middle name, however none of my high school documents (like my transcript) include it. I've never used my middle name with anything in high school.

If it doesn't appear on any high school documents, but it does appear on legal documents, do I put down my middle name on the Common App?

Also, on the Extracurricular Activities And Work Experience page, what's the character limit for Details and Accomplishments to avoid being cut off?

Middle name is “optional”, but recommended. Whatever your name when you apply, will be your name when you attend. You can add the middle name later.

What difference does it make?

If there are 15 John Does applying, the middle name, or at least the middle initial, can be used to distinguish the applicants, and not mix up the records.

At a minimum, have it match the name on your SAT/ACT test registrations.

The “exact name” is primarily for your first and last name. If your legal name is Jonathan Doe, then that is what they want, not Jon Doe.
