Middle School Courses in CSU Application

Hello,

I started at my high school in 7th grade taking classes typically for 9th graders (Biology, Algebra, Spanish I, etc). I took about 10 high school Honors courses in middle school. Even though they were taken in 7th 8th grade, I believe they still satisfy A-G courses (I’m not a California resident so I’m not too familiar with the A-G requirements).

The CSU application states to list Math and/or Language other than English courses taken in middle school. The problem is that I also took Honors science, english, and social studies courses; and they are also all included on my transcript and calculated in my GPA. So, should I enter all of the courses? Or am I only allowed to enter my Math and Language courses, as the application suggests?

Cal states only recognize Math courses (Algebra/Geometry etc…) and Foreign Language courses taken in Middle school as fulfilling the a-g course requirements needed to apply and the Middle school grades are not calculated into the CSU GPA.

Only 10-11th grades for the a-g course requirements are used for the CSU GPA calculation with a cap of 8 semesters of extra honors points.

Honors courses taken before 10th grade are not given the extra Honors point bump and as an OOS applicant only AP/IB classes taken in HS (10-11th) will count not HS designated Honors courses.

Definitely list the Math and Foreign Language courses and you can also list the rest of the HS courses but the grades will not be considered in the GPA and the Honors designation will also not be considered.

**1. Begin with selecting the earliest grade level that you completed courses to fulfill an A-G subject.
A. If you completed courses in 7th or 8th grade to fulfill A-G subject requirements, please select the
appropriate grade level, along with your first high school attended in 9th grade and your 9th grade academic year.
2. Select the School that you attended for that grade level
3. Select the appropriate Academic Year
4. Click the green check mark to continue

Listing high school level math and foreign language courses taken in middle school is important for CPSLO. For some reason, CPSLO’s MCA which adds points for additional math and foreign language beyond the minimum does not seem to use the usual CSU validation policy, so actually having the lower level courses listed is needed.

The usual CSU validation policy is that passing (C or higher grade) higher level courses creates the assumption that lower level courses have been completed, even if they are not listed (or D/F grades were earned in them). For example, algebra 2 validates algebra 1, and foreign language level N validates levels 1 through N-1.
