I took Algebra I in eighth grade. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the class would affect my high school GPA and ended up getting a grade I was less than happy with.

Obviously not all schools use middle school grades to calculate GPA. Do colleges disregard these grades because of the difference?

No, if it was a high school course, then it is considered. However, admissions will take into consideration that you were in middle school and probably not weigh that “B or C” as much as one in high school.

regardless of whether or not you can hide this grade, it could matter for your class rank. I was screwed over by this because I did not do well in middle school… guess what, it comes back to bite me for college admissions

Algebra I is generally considered high school level even though everyone takes it in 8th grade now. In general I don’t think middle school grades should count for college admissions. In middle school my grades sucked; I was irresponsible and much less focused than I am now. Middle schoolers are still very immature and probably not thinking in terms of college yet. What was your grade? Even a C might be overlooked with a good excuse.

I got a B+ in the class and it appears on my transcript as “Middle School Algebra”. My school doesn’t rank, so I don’t have to worry about that.

…you’re concerned about a B+ in a class you took in 8th grade? That’s a drop in the pond. A single B+ doesn’t hurt you, and especially if it was as long ago as middle school.
