I recently took the SATs and received a score of 1500 (reading 580, math 430, and writing 490). Note that I am in eighth grade and I did not study incredibly hard at all for the test. I know that this score could never get me into a good college, but I was wondering if I am on the right track? I am not worried about my reading, as I can improve it with vocab studying (although I will be taking the new SAT which will not focus as much on vocab). I should porbably learn the math in high school and I will obviously study it, however again the new SAT will not have difficult math. Lastly, my I was very nervous when writing my essay and I didn't come close to finishing it. So am I doing the right thing? Thank you!

Dude, you’re way too early to be seriously taking the SAT. Most people take the SAT for the first time their junior year. You haven’t even learned half the things the SAT will cover, especially in the math section. I’m not going to tell you what you need to improve on because it honestly doesn’t matter at this point. You’re in 8th grade! Besides, none of us know what the new exam will look like so we can’t really say anything about your chances.

If you’re really curious, you can compare your score with the cutoffs for CTY and other similar programs to see how people your age are performing. But really, relax. You’ll be fine.

Trust me, I know plenty about when people take the SAT and the topics. I just took it to see what it was like before everything counted. My cousin took it in middle school said said it was a great experience- she ended up getting a 2400.

I took the SAT in seventh grade for CTY, and then this March in my junior year, and there is so much improvement. I didn’t even start preparing until this year. If you do light prep throughout your first two years and then go heavier in 11th grade, you’ll definitely improve to a score good enough for college.

The difficulty of SAT varies for all students; some will find it easy and some will find it hard. Those who find SAT not so difficult will probably end up taking it earlier when they feel ready for it.

That being said, I really urge you to take the SAT when you have adequately prepared for it. Do some practice problems and get comfortable with the overall testing environment. Taking it in middle school in my opinion is too early. I suggest you take it around junior year time.

My advice is to do well on the SAT is simply to PRACTICE and UNDERSTAND your mistakes.

Good luck.
