I’m a rising senior, I’m currently working on the UC app and the Common app.
Based on the Rogerhub GPA Calculator, I have a 3.96 weighted academic GPA, but Junior year, I got a C+ in Calculus first semester then a B+ second semester.
I took the SAT:
CR: 740
M: 670
W: 800
SAT II:
Math 2: 710
Chinese: 770
and ACT: Composite: 34
I don’t have much extracurriculars other than church youth group, some Key Club, one year of tennis, marching band, I interned last summer at a biotech company, I got a part-time job at a boba shop this summer and am working into the school year. I’m an Asian male born and raised in California.
I think I’m going to apply for an English major. I’m thinking of applying mostly to University of California Campuses:
Reach: UC San Diego, University of Southern California
Normal: UC Irvine, Davis, Santa Barbara
Safety: UC Santa Cruz, University of the Pacific
The reasons I’m not applying to UCLA/Berkeley is 1) I probably wouldn’t get in and 2) I know myself to not be that hard-working, so I feel like I wouldn’t do well to compete.
Are my choices realistic based on my stats and stuff? Thanks so much for your guys’ time!
I’ve seen some good input on here, any help/advice is appreciated!
What’s your UC GPA?
Edit: Oh wait, ok I got you.
SAT is nice enough, I mean you could still apply to Berk and LA if you want. They are reaches, but it doesn’t mean 0 chance. UCSD is a slight reach for you, and you’re spot on for everything else. Just asking, what’s your course rigor like?
You seem to have a pretty solid handle on your chances. Your GPA and ECs are a little light got UCD, UCI and UCSB but, may be offset by your test scores. They could go either way and strong essays will make a big difference.
UOP is an odd choice - why are they on your list?
I’d add UCR, Cal Poly SLO and SDSU to your ap list. SLO could go either way depending on your major but, you are a shoe in for the others.
UCSD/USC: High Match
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Match
UOP/UCSC: Low Match
Add UCR or your local CSU as a safety to your list. Good luck.
Michelle, I’ve taken Honors Precalc, Adv Soph. English, Honors Chem, in sophomore year, and last year I took Honors American Literature and AP Bio.
Thanks, NCalRent! UoP just cause my parents wanted me to apply to some privates, and I’m thinking of an English/Communication major.
Gumbymom, my dad thinks a CSU is beneath me, but I’ll look into it a bit! Thanks!
Take a look at LMU, USD, Chapman and Santa Clara then…
All are good pvt schools, in a nice location and nice weather and you’d be a strong candidate for some merit aid.
Good luck.
I agree with Gumbymom’s chances. But just a tip: if you want to reply to a commentor, you need to put an @ infront of their username so they get a notification. Otherwise they won’t know that you’re talking to them and may not see your reply. For example: @JTsenggop

Fixed.
Your statistics are good and match Davis and UCSB. UCSC is safe along with U of P. Please prepare a thoughtful statement of purpose and proofread it with a friend before submitting.
What major are you planning to apply for?
@iamjack oh okay. Thank you. How do you edit?
edit: Never mind, but within 15 minutes? dang that sucks
@QuiteAverage90 I’m probably now looking to do Communication/Journalism or English, preferably at USC.
USC- High Match/Low Reach
UCSD- High Match
UCD- Match
UCI- Match
UCSB- Match
UCSC- Low Match
University of the Pacific- Safety
@QuiteAverage90 really? Because after visiting USC, I think I’d really like to go there. But I can’t tell if they’re VERY academic
@JTsenggop The average unweighted GPA for USC is 3.82 for the 2014-2015 year. Although your test scores are in the middle 50%, your GPA is below average.
If you think about UCLA as too competitive then USC is not far behind! USC and UCLA are academically on par.
