Hi!
I have a question about the Middlebury College Common App. There's a set of questions reading:

"Candidates are admitted to one of two semester programs. We are unable to guarantee your first choice of semester, but we would like you to indicate your preference.
Would you prefer September admission?
Yes / No
Would you prefer February admission?
Yes / No
Would you like to be considered for both September and February admission?
Yes / No"

If I get accepted, I hope to go there in the fall. Should I then put Yes/No/No? Or would that hurt my chances?

At the info session, they said that if you REALLY want to be admitted, it’s best to respond yes to the third option (being considered for both.)

Having said that, my D responded Y/N/N because she really wanted September admission, and she was admitted ED.

So it’s really up to you and depends on whether you would “consider” February admission. I don’t think it would DECREASE your chances to indicate you are happy to be considered for both.

Your admission into Middlebury by no means hinges on how you answer these three questions. Don’t over think it. If you want to be considered only for September admissions, then be honest with yourself and make sure the Middlebury Admissions Committee knows that. Your changes of being admitted as a “Feb” and being admitted as a “Reg” are negligibly different. Plus, in reality, your responses to those questions are considered by admissions, but do not exclude you from the fall or spring pools – indeed, I know of quite a few students at Midd who put down only Feb, but were admitted as a Reg and vice versa.

For 2012 grads around here, there seemed to be a real uptick in student acceptances being deferred to second semester… some by admissions and some as request. But while I too believe you should answer honestly (and I think there has traditionally been a certain type to come into Midd as a Feb), but S answered Y, N, Y… figuring you never know what windows, doors and options might arise between now and decision making May 1 (should you be accepted).
