Anyone really worried about Middlebury EDII results?
OP: Cannot address your question, but wonder which other schools offer ED II.
When do decisions come out? I’m also waiting for mine
The 8th of February at 8am eastern time
Did anyone else see the 2024 ED1 admissions data on Middlebury’s website? The acceptance rate was almost 56%. I’m hoping it is around the same for ED 2. Anyone know?
Where did you find those ED1 admissions statistics?
You will find some statistics below, but they are difficult to decipher (unspecified ED levels, shaded states do not equal stated total, illogical bar graph).
http://www.middlebury.edu/newsroom/archive/2020-news/node/643338
It’s 50.6%, and that includes 30 Posse scholars (from about 60 finalists who all are included in the 643 applicants), and a fairly large number of athletes whose acceptance rate is higher, and an unknown number of legacies. So the actual acceptance rate for “unhooked” EDI applicants is likely closer to 35%.
From Middlebury’s figures (reply #6) doesn’t it appear that a 50.7% rate can be inferred only by combining ED I and ED II (or by stipulating 0 ED II applicants)?
It depends on whether the “643 from those applying under the Early Decision program” include both ED 1 and 2, since the 326 students they mentioned were ED1 admissions.
An acceptance rate of 56% for ED1 means that there were 582 ED1 applicants and that would mean that there were only 61 ED2 applicants, which doesn’t seem reasonable.
Last year they had about 640 ED1 applications, and they only accepted 297, so accepting 326 from fewer than 500 applicants seems too high an acceptance rate, especially since they are still dealing with the over-enrollment of the class of 2022.
On the other hand, 326 is pretty low for all ED applications, so who knows? The announcement is pretty unclear. The numbers also seem strange, since there seem far fewer ED applicants to Middlebury than in previous years, while the drop in RD applicants seems much smaller.
Another approach that doesn’t seem to work can be tried by subtracting the regular decision applicants (8522) from the total applicants (9165). This leaves 643 (again) as the combined figure for ED I and ED II, resulting in an ED I acceptance rate that cannot even be inferred.
True. As I also wrote - the figure of 326 seems to large for ED1, but too small for ED1+ED2.
Accepting 326 from a smaller pool than the one from which they selected only 297 last year seems strange, especially since they are still trying to correct for two years of over-enrollment. However, accepting only 326 seems to create an much larger uncertainty in enrollment expectations.
The difference in numbers of ED applicants also make no sense. Last year there were 926 ED applicants. A drop to 643 seems to be too much. If you correct for recruited athletes and Posse finalists, we’re talking about 740 to 460 (a 38% drop). That just seems to steep a drop, especially when considering that the RD pool dropped from 8,824 to 8,522 (a 3.5% drop). This does not compute. There seem to be some 150 to 200 ED applicants “missing”.
Perhaps they did not consider recruited athletes and Posse finalists in the ED1 applicant pool. That would be around 170-180 applicants.
If the 8522 “regular decision” figure is actually composed of RD and ED II applicants, would that reconcile apparent discrepancies, @MWolf?
Well my friend and I didn’t get in what about you guys?
I was deferred… anyone know stats about getting in RD to Midd after being deferred ED 2?
@cookiedough39: Looking at a comparable scenario, last year Middlebury rejected 276 ED I applicants and deferred 81. If ED II follows a similar pattern, then I’d say you are now in a relatively small group that Middlebury will continue to seriously consider for admission.
Okay thank you. Any advice as to what I could send or do to bolster my shot at admissions? I am going to write a letter of continued interest in the next day or two. I have already sent them mid year grades so there isn’t much else left for them to receive from me.
Yes, that would make sense.
@cookiedough39 : that’s a good start. Have you visited? Do you know what you’d like to major in? If so, see if you can get to Midd and sit in on a couple of classes, and if you’ve very specific interests (ie, like US foreign policy vs poli-sci or history) reach out to the faculty members who teach these courses and see if they’re able to see you or have a chat on the phone. Some will, so won’t be able to.
I did an athletic recruit visit this fall and sat in on classes with team members. I also visited and did an info session another time. I had an alumni interview recently as well, which I thought went great.
I plan on majoring in history or political science.
Would it help if I reach out to the professors whose classes I sat in on this fall?
Thank you so much for the help!
